Revisionists like to revile Cortes and the conquistadors but they observed the Aztecs murdering thousands of helpless prisoners by cutting their beating hearts out of their bodies, one after the other at the rate of a victim every couple of minutes. Then mounting their skulls on a giant wall of thousands of skulls. They wrote about it and archaeology has pretty much corroborated all of it. Yes they had a lust for the gold but they were also horrified at what they surely viewed as demonic activity. I'm sure it fed their decision to wipe this culture off the face of the earth just as much as their desire to steal their gold.

Spanish Conquistadors sharpened their swords in Spain on the moors for 700 years before they set foot in the Americas. There were more crusaders to the middle east from Spain than any other country. Forced conversions and elimination of heretics was the Conquistador stock in trade.
