$800 dollars- installation isn’t hard- or if you hire someone, shouldn’t cost much

I paid about half that here in SC for a tankless installed, but I still thought that was highway robbery.

What I wanted was a NG tank water heater like I had before, but apparently they jacked the prices on those to make the tankless ones look good.

At least I can still get electric ones for my rentals without spending a mint.

Wow. I complained about 700 for new water heater, installation and had to reroute tubes. You are getting screwed.

Electric or gas hot water heater runs about $400 with $200 for the install. So for less than $700 here. Obviously YMMV.

How much for just the water heater itself? I had one replaced last month and called a plumber and he quoted me $1100 for the WH and another $900 for installation, “code upgrades”, and disposal. Then, I called Home Depot and got the exact same WH for $600 (which is probably where the plumber would have bought it and then applied the markup) and installation and delivery for another $400. They quoted me $500 for the install, but when their plumber arrived, he told me that I didn’t need the “code upgrade” after all and crossed it off the quote.

I had a new one installed in November. Called our local plumbing/HVAC company, whole transaction done on the telephone, installation the next day. It was under $900 installed with new shut off valves, etc., and removal and haul away of old one.

I am in equally blue Maryland.

I’m the opposite of you I guess. I live out in the boonies, fly over country, red state. I collected “junk” water heaters and made one good one out of three “junk” ones.

Just bought a 50 gal. power vented NG water heater for $835 from a box store. A power vented water heater is one of the most expensive types. Got a quote of about $600 for install and removal. I thought the install cost was pretty high. I haven’t had it installed yet.

Too late now but next time shop around.

A 50 gallon water heater costs $500 and up at Home Depot. I install my own, but I can’t imagine labor costing that much. It takes me a couple hours to drain and remove the old one and install the new one. That company must be making $700 an hour.

This must be one of those “direct-vent” type units (using a double-walled exhaust and a fan to draw in fresh air)?

Depends on what kind of water heater you had installed as well. A hybrid electric unit would be about $1,400 from the orange store. I could see that costing around $2400 to install once you calculate the plumbing re-routing, code/inspection BS.

But if he installed a 5 year 40 gal orange store special, those things are like $300, you got overcharged.

I did one myself, 50 gal electic, AO Smith 15 year warranty model, was about $700 from Lowes, after I bought copper tubing, replaced 3 valves that were also bad, solder, flux, and all the other goodies to do the job right, I was under $850. I bought a higher end unit because they generally last longer.

If your plumber installed a high end unit with a long warranty and he had to replace a lot of pipe or re-route a lot of pipe, I could see it costing that. (And he sweat the pipe, none of that shark bite BS) I could see it costing that much.
