What’s a Crossfit ?

Some that I occasionally workout with are of the opinion that Crossfit training is too much too soon and does not have a sufficient warm up. Max effort in min time.

The kipping they do instead of pullups are a public nuisance.

No complaints even from my joints👣👣

My Knees and ankles, know well the slight difference between concrete and asphalt.

They now have to be eased into the work.
Or they become quite vociferous.

kipping

Been a long time since I’ve heard that term.

...According to CrossFit founder Greg Glassman, the kipping pull-up is a full body movement that increases the demands on coordination and agility compared to a strict pull-up.

I know what their founder and their literature states.

A crossfitter was at my gym, and made a remark about the (strict) pullup technique I was using.

So I asked him to see how many he could do. He did two, before a long pause at the bottom. Then, as if to save face, he did about a minute of useless flailing (kipping) while dangling from the bar.

Uncle Rhabdo from rhabdomyolysis...

To each their own, Crossfit isn’t my thing.

“Whether you’re a CrossFit junkie or not, you’ve probably seen the headlines claiming the fitness craze is to blame for extreme numbers of rhabdomyolysis cases. The condition is brought on by extreme exercise that causes muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney damage. But before you cancel your CrossFit membership, keep in mind that the condition is incredibly rare, and Rhabdo (as it’s nicknamed) isn’t exclusive to CrossFit by any stretch of the imagination.”

https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19914211/rhabdomyolysis-and-crossfit/ One of what must be hundreds of cross fit articles on the web.

The more physical fitness out there though, I think that’s good, near me, we have a “Vertical Endeavors”, you are able to climb inside the building, they have this new chain called “9 round kickboxing”, you go into these places and they have some sort of exercise, first one’s free I think. So, overall, I think this is good.

Yeah, I see that now. Seems universal for Crossfit places no matter where you are though I suppose NYC is commensurately higher because their non-Crossfit clubs were averaging $800 or more a year when I worked down there a few years back.

Our accounting/tax outfit is breaking their lease and moving specifically because a cross-fit moved in next door.

You literally cannot hold a normal conversation due to the music, and the intermittent bangs and thumps are continual and distracting. The added vibration is bad for their computers (they've already had several go down)

I'm all for exercise and fitness, free markets etc. But these businesses are not good neighbors. They need to be in dedicated single-use buildings because only maybe a machine shop or some such could co-exist with them.

We’ve got a crossfit gym in what is largely, a warehouse area. I’m thinking a bit out loud here, but I went up to the door to look at their hours opened. And it was kind of odd, in that they are only opened a few hours a day. I don’t see how a business can survive doing that.

They might have something like 10-2 on Saturdays, 11-2 on weekdays and a few at night. Let it suffice to say, I thought the hours were uncommon.

Their greatest act of stupidity is high rep Olympic lifts after running a 400 or 800m.

Form is key in the Olympic lifts.

I recall multiple people getting rhabdo & heat stroke, pissing their pants and passing out. Totally worth $150...

CrossFit is a branded fitness regimen created by Greg Glassman and is a registered trademark of CrossFit, Inc. which was founded by Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai in 2000. Promoted as both a physical exercise philosophy and also as a competitive fitness sport, CrossFit workouts incorporate elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, girevoy sport, calisthenics, strongman, and other exercises. It is practiced by members of over 13,000 affiliated gyms, roughly half of which are located in the United States, and by individuals who complete daily workouts (otherwise known as "WODs" or "workouts of the day"). CrossFit has come into some controversy for allegedly causing people to suffer from unnecessary injuries and exertional rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which muscle tissues die.
