Footage of police arresting a woman at a Saraland, Alabama, Waffle House shows authorities threatening to break her arm after tackling her to the floor. Chikesia Clemons, who reportedly refused to pay a 50-cent charge on her bill (for plastic utensils), is claiming that excessive force was used and is facing charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

"If I eat at either one of those I taste grease for 24 hours after eating."

As a fire inspector, I once responded to a fire crew complaint at a local Waffle House of grease pouring out of the roof rain spouts onto the ground. We went up on the roof and found a huge puddle of grease surrounding the hood vent. The roof was so squishy from being saturated from grease, we couldn't get with five feet of the vent. Certain death for a firefighter going up on the roof in a a fire.

My favorite stop while travelling the intersates has been Waffle House for the past 50 years. Consistently good food and great coffee at reasonable prices and they never close. But I do avoid Waffle Houses in large urban areass for obvious reasons...trivia question: What is Waffle Houses busiest day of the year and the only day that all employees including management are required to work ?.....Mother’s Day

Waffle House charges 50 cents for to-go orders. I believe this is where the plastic utensils came into play.

Thank you. I knew there had to be more to this.

WTF is up with Waffle House?

If it's 3 am, you're just starting to sober up a little, Waffle House is open.
And BTW, they have a pretty good breakfast.

These are intentional actions by AA’s at many different businesses. Some get away with it by free stuff, they are so used to getting, and some don’t. Break her arm!!

I live just outside Saraland. I don’t believe these people live here. I’m pretty sure they are from the ghettos of Mobile. The one filming wrote a social media post about the incident in which she expressed her dissatisfaction with the Mobile police who of course had nothing to do with it. Here is some updated info if anyone is interested:

She wasn’t topless until she started fighting with the police. She was barely wearing any clothes. The complainers actually accused the police of stripping her.

Just out of curiosity, what should a police officer do when someone who is under arrest refuses to submit and continues to physically resist?

Shirt should go up, but pants should go down.

What do I win?

Okay, you win. Unfortunately no prizes are being awarded. In this case the girl appeared to be wearing some kind of tube top dress so it wouldn’t matter which way you went, it was coming off.

The main point I’m trying to make is that was it really necessary to get to the point of making an arrest over 50c?

Could the situation have been diffused more effectively? We don’t know, it doesn’t seem as though any more video is available. There’s just many times where cops excite a situation vs. just calmly talking through it and de-escalating things. I’ve seen it many times and I believe this is an area of training that is lacking.

I really doubt, that at any time, this woman was considered much of a threat. So even saying, “I’ll break your arm” is just beyond what I think our public servants should be saying or doing.

I’m pro LEO’s and get how dangerous their job can be, but they’re also not military dealing with a combative enemy on a battlefield.

You are correct! I have occasionally placed orders to go and the waitress always points out that there is a 50 cents charge because of the extra work required to put the food into containers.

Country ham, home fries, two pieces of buttered toast, large grits plus butter, three scrambled eggs, plus some jelly. That order provides me with two meals!

Has anybody noticed that a lot of these issues seem to be planned? There is always a ‘friend’ there with a camera and they always seem to intentionally escalate the situation to start a ruckus.

can’t these damn officers use a bit more tac for a citizen that has a .50 cent dispute. This is not right even if the woman is wrong. (assumption)

I don’t think the events are planned, but I do believe the response is. There are two goals to this; make us afraid to defend ourselves and to make us tolerate behavior that is, in our society, currently unacceptable. This lady was disorderly, period. She wouldn’t leave when asked by the store or by the police. The two guys in Starbuck’s the other day had two options when first confronted; they could have left or bought a cup of coffee. The decided to take option 3 and be assholes. That’s all that happened there. I would expect no different if I behaved this way.

She wasn’t arrested over fifty cents. She was arrested because she was a drunk disorderly bitch. I repeat my question; what should the police do when someone resists arrest? Turn around and walk out? She put herself in that position. Not the police or anybody else. History shows that usually if you comply with police orders you won’t get hurt. They just arrested a guy who killed 4 people in random shooting. He didn’t get shot. Why not, because he was white? No, because when they told him to lay down on the ground he did it immediately.

You’re missing the point of what I’m talking about.

“drunk disorderly bitch” - was not the reason given for the arrest, as far as I saw. The only facts given was a dispute over 50c. If that was the only issue it should not have escalated to the point of an arrest in the first place. Police, in many instances I’ve seen, do not focus on diffusing a situation but go straight into authoritarian mode, almost provoking a person to justify taking them down.

Of course force is required if somebody is resisting arrest, I never said otherwise. That said, they obviously didn’t consider her a threat yet told her they would “break her arm”. Do you think that would be justified?

Do you actually believe that this lady just “complained about 50 cents” and they called the police to brutalize her? The news story and the video are incomplete and selective.

Waffle House Corporate has since come out and supported the store and police version of events.
