Republicans might need to start panicking about a key Senate seat in a deep-red state

Former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, is leading Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn by double digits going into the Senate race to replace retiring Sen. Bob Corker, according to a poll released Thursday.

The poll, conducted by Middle Tennessee State University, shows 45% of registered voters favor Bredesen, while just 35% would back Blackburn. In addition, 17% are undecided.

For registered independents, preference for Bredesen over Blackburn increases to 12 points. A fifth of Republican respondents would cross the aisle and vote for Bredesen, compared to just five percent of Democrats who would do so for Blackburn.

Blackburn's poor performance in the poll shows that Democrats are in striking distance to flip a long-held Republican Senate seat. When Corker last year abruptly decided to bow out of running for reelection, Blackburn quickly jumped in to take his place.

I think a lot of folks here are taking the mid terms very lightly.

It looks bad for Republicans. Yes, it could change. But I dont think the Democrat enthusiasm is going to diminish. Donald Trump is the most hated POTUS in my lifetime (which goes back to Nixon). If there is even a slight downturn from Trump voters compared to 2016, I think the Democrats will win both houses easily.

I mean Blackburn is definitely going to be the nominee here, and she’d definitely a strongly conservative candidate, so I think your analysis is a bit off regarding Tennessee Senate race. The problem is that Bredesen is a centrist Dem who is very well known in Tn having been a two term governor and two term Nashville mayor, and people basically like him trust him and think he’s pretty intelligent compared to Blackburn.

Bredesen runs ads trying to appear to “do what’s best for Tennessee” and not overtly Democrat, but surely most Tennesseans will see through that.

All Trump has to do is make 2 visits, and the race will be over.

Just an observation, East TN solid Conservative, West TN solid Dems, Middle TN turning into a bunch of RINOs and worse Dems. Marriage of Country Music with Hollywood has not been good for Nashville. Just my two cents worth since I live in TN. Very concerned for Blackburn not winning this thing here.

Repeal the ill-conceived 17th Amendment.

The 16th Amendment can disappear too.

You nailed the spin for this stupid article. I live in Shelby County which votes DemocRAT because of the minority population in Memphis and would probably vote for the former gov.

Marsha Blackburn IMO will win the Senate seat. Any polls by the fake news propaganda Tennessee newspapers will try and tout fake poll numbers against Marsha Blackman. All the non Memphis cities and towns will go for Marsha big time.

Good grief the only place it is majority Dems is Memphis in West Tennessee. Look who did the poll...headed by a bunch of left wing academics. The poll details are probably tilted to asking asking more Dems.

“Repeal the ill-conceived 17th Amendment.”

I’ve been all for that, too, but the last time I saw it discussed here, there were a few who vehemently disagreed, and several others MeToo’ed.

Can’t remember why they thought repeal was BAD, though.

"Blackburn is 100% Trump devotee."

That she is, but Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville are a deep purple shading to blue.

I know people are worried. That needs to translate to us start helping with campaigns. Candidates need people to make calls to voters. Pro-life and immigration organizations can help mobilize the base, but all of them need help. Having a job is not a viable excuse when volunteering is not just knocking on doors and a full time commitment.

Polling registered voters as opposed to likely voters at this early stage is basically worthless data.

Thanks for the comment from that area. I’m worried about all of it, but we can win if we get involved even if it’s just helping with phone calls to voters. Can you and others organize and take a few hours a week to help her campaign?
