I wouldn’t watch anything with lefty Kevin Costner in it.

These things are ALWAYS a matter of personal preference, but The Outlaw Josie Wales was a good as it gets. So was Big Jake and Quigley Down Under

It seems like sometimes it's best to look at who makes them more that what were the best.

Tom Selleck made some great ones, such as Crossfire Trail and Last Stand at Saber River. Horse Soldiers was a fantastic western. So was Ron Howard's version of The Alamo. I s'pect we could list these all night.

Right. You can add “The Quick and the Dead” (Sam Elliott) and “The Sacketts” (Tom Selleck) to that list.

That was nice. Guess I’ll never get used to
seeing electric guitars playing with symphonies.

I would add The Ox Bow Incident to the list. I also really liked the made-for-television The Quick and the Dead.

If mountain man movies qualify as westerns, I would add The Mountain Men starring Charlton Heston and Brian Keith. Again, I don't know if it qualifies or not but I really enjoyed Quigley Down Under.

Zane Grey’s Riders of the Purple Sage is the only book I ever read that routinely uses “ejaculated” for “said.”

OTOH, I love Shane. Just watched it again last week. ‘It’s the killing , Joey’.... Great scene in there too about guns as tools....

I agree that High Noon was not leftist and Grace Kelly was pretty enough to make it watchable by herself.

On the other hand, Louis L”Amour hated it. He said the idea of the whole town being scared and rescued by the lone hero was bunk. He said most of them would have been veterans of the Civil War and were not afraid of anything.

It is a common theme in Westerns, both movies and TV shows tho.

For me, The Magnificent Seven was the best.

Was surprised that nobody mentioned Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid by this point. I know they were both liberals. The other two I don’t think have been mentioned is Gunfight at OK Corral(1957) or War Wagon.

“Lonesome Dove”. It might have been a TV mini-series but I’ve seen all the great westerns and to me “Lonesome Dove” takes a back seat to none of them. If it had been a feature length movie Robert Duval would have won Best Actor and it would have won Best Picture and cleaned up on the rest.

Liberty Valance hands down number one. I much preferred Strother Martin as Marvin’s snickering, sniveling side kick. River of No Return is a must for this list.
