“Lonesome Dove”. It might have been a TV mini-series but I’ve seen all the great westerns and to me “Lonesome Dove” takes a back seat to none of them. If it had been a feature length movie Robert Duval would have won Best Actor and it would have won Best Picture and cleaned up on the rest.

Lonesome Dove... Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are so good I have watched it over and over and over. Combine those two leads with a very deep cast - Chris Cooper and Anjelica Huston to name two - and a Larry McMurtry book and you have the greatest long-form Western ever.

McMurtry originally developed Lonesome Dove as a screenplay, with John Wayne, James Stewart, and Henry Fonda in the Woodrow, Gus, and Jake Spoon roles.

One of the greatest scenes to me is when he sees his boy being whipped by the Army scout and rides hell for leather down the street, knocks him off his horse, and beats the snot out of him while everyone looks on...

You can hear the shocked intake of breath amongst the bystanders when he grabs the forging tongs before Gus lassoes him!
