A few weeks ago we asked our readers to vote for their least favorite songs from the 1990s, so it was the obvious next move to dial it back 10 years and see what you guys hated in the 1980s. The results are sure to infuriate a lot of people. For the record, I personally disagree with most of these selections. In fact, I love a lot of these songs...
10. Rick Astley - 'Never Gonna Give You Up'...
9. Taco - 'Puttin' On The Ritz'...
8. Toni Basil - 'Mickey'...
7. Bobby McFerrin - 'Don't Worry Be Happy'...
6. Falco - 'Rock Me Amadeus'...
5. Men Without Hats - 'The Safety Dance'...
4. Wham! - 'Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)'....
3. Chris de Burgh - 'Lady In Red'....
2. Europe - 'The Final Countdown'...
1. Starship - 'We Built This City'...

I recall listening to American Top 40 and watching Solid Gold (as Marilyn McCoo was a TV crush of mine back then) up through 1984 but a lot of stuff from 1985 onward I really did not like. Therefore, my favourite time was years like 1981 to about 1984 (even then “Wake Me Up” sucked in addition to being overplayed).
WHAT!!!!!!! “Don’t Worry Be Happy” is a bad song???? What is the world coming too?????
I think there’s a difference between “bad” and “overplayed.” That song may have been overplayed, but I don’t think it’s a bad one.
I remember hearing the extended version of that song at a school dance back in the day but did not hear it again until dialing it up on YouTube.
“Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes. The worst song ever made.
The 70s had good music? Okay, yeah, Bowie, The Police, etc, but “Brand New Key”? 99.44% of disco? Streisand? Roberta Flack? Carole King (should have stuck to writing...)? Lots of other stuff I’ve managed to forget about hearing.
“Heres to you Tawny.”
Who is Tawny?
These were bad?
That’s like some of the best songs.
my SO hates hates hates that song, too.
I like it.
You’re not alone Ma’am.
Tawny Kitaan is the hot actress who danced on the car throughout the video.
My vote for a truly horrible, slapped together song of the 1980s is “American Dream” by Crosby Stills Nash and a cameo by a worse-than-usual sounding Young. They obviously hated Reagan and they wanted to relive their late 60s glory days with some fantasy that they’d sing a protest song and get the 80s youth protesting him. It didn’t work. The song was stupefyingly bad.
Btw, if the Rolling Stones “Highwire” came out two years earlier than it did, I’d nominate that.
I like all of those songs.
Styx’s “Mr. Roboto” should be up there.
Heck, anything by Styx.
Somebodys Watching Me and the B side of the tape “Obscene Phonecaller” were a lot of fun to sing to.
“We Are The World”........the bad song against which all bad songs are measured!
Tawny is the name of the model crawling all over the car in that music video.
i do agree there is a difference between overplayed and bad.
But I get SICK of the overplayed stuff so much that I call stuff bad.
After a while, I can enjoy a song again....
“Tender is the Night” by Jackson Browne got overplayed until I hated it. Now I can hear it again and enjoy it.
“Say Say Say” by McCartney/Jackson was the same way.
