A few weeks ago we asked our readers to vote for their least favorite songs from the 1990s, so it was the obvious next move to dial it back 10 years and see what you guys hated in the 1980s. The results are sure to infuriate a lot of people. For the record, I personally disagree with most of these selections. In fact, I love a lot of these songs...
10. Rick Astley - 'Never Gonna Give You Up'...
9. Taco - 'Puttin' On The Ritz'...
8. Toni Basil - 'Mickey'...
7. Bobby McFerrin - 'Don't Worry Be Happy'...
6. Falco - 'Rock Me Amadeus'...
5. Men Without Hats - 'The Safety Dance'...
4. Wham! - 'Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)'....
3. Chris de Burgh - 'Lady In Red'....
2. Europe - 'The Final Countdown'...
1. Starship - 'We Built This City'...

Cute girl
I’m shocked anyone could have possibly thought that George Michael was straight after that one.
Agree.
...but then there’s all of the songs by Boy George!!
I win ;p
>>Sorry, that song was released in Sept 1979.<<
It was so bad it transcends mere time.
:)
note: AND THEY KEEP PLAYING IT!!!
As far as the song in question goes, I prefer the version on the “Saints And Sinners” album, with the late Jon Lord on the organ.
I didn’t like that one.
Agreed. Thank God my 80s werent ruined by videos. Frankly MTV died because the idea of filming music stinks. People finally realized they didnt want to have to look at a screen, or have their vision of a song forever ruined.
And Bobbie Brown...
She’s my Cherry Pie...
Mickey began life as Kitty, an album track by British pop band Racey.

My own McFerrin lyrics: A man’s got a gun up to your head, in 15 seconds you willbe dead but don’t worry...
Luckily I was either deployed or underway 95% of that decade. Lots of BAD music I remember ignoring it as soon as I heard. To this day I turn that crap off and dig into my vinyl pile. There is always something worth listening to on vinyl.
I don't know if they really were, but they made a great one hit wonder.
Eagles Hotel California and Fleetwood Mac Rumors was about the end it.
I think theres a difference between bad and overplayed.
Agreed.
Plenty of good songs were ruined by playing them over and over and over and...
Back in the day I asked a DJ why in the name of Pete stations do that. He told me the owners make them.
Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon.
Total Eclipse of The Heart, Bonnie Tyler
Centerfold, J. Geils Band.
Payola never went away.
Yes, that was a stupid song. So was “I think I’m turning Japanese.”
>>I think theres a difference between bad and overplayed. That song may have been overplayed, but I dont think its a bad one.<<
That is true for about 1/2 that list.
“The song itself isnt that bad. It isnt that good but it certainly isnt the worst.”
I never got the hate for this song. Cheesy 80s sound, yes. Textbook pop hit, yes. Perfect for radio ... yes.
Something I’d search through a pile of albums/cassettes/CDs/directory of poorly named MP3s to dig up and play? Hell no! That’s true of a lot of pop hits though :-).
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO HATED THIS! MY BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER (OR POSSIBLY SISTER). THIS IS WHEN I BASICALLY GAVE UP ON POPULAR MUSIC - AND HOW MTV L O V E D THIS ONE! BARFFF!
I would like to nominate Walk This Way by Run DMC and that big mouth guy that dresses like a loose woman.
Truly awful, and signaled the beginning of the end of everything good
