WOODLAWN, Md. Police in Maryland say a car blew up when a man inside lit a cigarette after spritzing himself with an aerosol body spray.
Baltimore County police spokeswoman Jennifer Peach tells The Baltimore Sun that the cigarette-and-spray combination caused "a sudden and violent expansion of the air molecules" in the car Thursday, creating a boom that pushed the roof up, shattered the front window and blew the doors open.

A few years ago, a couple of geniuses got the bright idea to drive around a local neighborhood and throw illegal fireworks at houses in the middle of the night. They pulled up to the first house, genius one holds out the bottle rocket, genius two lights it, but when genius one goes to throw it, he discovers he has forgotten to roll down the car window. Rocket goes off in a very small subcompact car. Both geniuses sustained pretty serious burns. Newscaster reading the story cracked me up, “Police suspect alcohol may have been involved.” Gee, ya’ think?
Good thing they were drunk, that might’ve hurt.
Sure it’s insurance speak, but how many people know how to properly spell WHUMPH!
...but, a few lines later, the same article says he was hospitalized with "serious injuries"...
What?
That’s got to be it. But why would he spray himself before the cigarette was out?
He was severely burned, according to the article.
couple months back a couple was transporting propane grill- had neglected to turn off propane- one or other tried to light cigarette - the damage was spectacular. Remember as a co worker had just bought similar car.
I believe article was on FR
The real fun is when they showed us the dangers of sparks, heat and flame when combined with aerosol cans, by spraying something and putting a lighter to it.
The next day out on the school yard, there we were, comparing notes on our own home experiments. Aqua Net hairspray produced some very cool looking blue flames!
Ah, I theenk it was a boom?
But he lit up another before the alcohol from the spray had a chance to dissipate.
Saw something similar happen to a girl who had just sprayed her hair. This was during the time Big Hair was the style and before they made it against the law to smoke in the public restrooms.
Ay yi yi!
Good thing there was a lot of water around.
Sounds like he wasn’t smoking tobacco.
Could be.
