Ive been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.
We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I dont mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.
But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on grannys thread.
I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on grannys threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room and insisted upon having a basement from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products
.the list is endless.
So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have grannys ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.
Well just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I wont be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. Id just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.
Here are grannys threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:
nw_arizona_grannys Thread #1
For instance, a poster and I were discussing how long canning lids last. In my heyday of prepping, I bought 2 cases of Ball lids. I also bought a lot of tattler lids and have been enjoying learning how to use those. BUT I dont know if I should be using up the Ball lids or if they will last.
And the rings on the tattlers, not sure about those either.
Nor how to best store any of them. I LOVE mylar and oxygen absorbers! But I dont know if thats the best way, or perhaps a foodsaver, or if they should be in my moist cool basement or in the drier, warmer house .
This subject doesn't really fit on any of the other weekly or subject-oriented threads that I know about. Sorry if I am stepping on any toes here.
Anyway, thats the sort of thing I could ask on grannys threads and get 5-50 responses! We could bounce around ideas and share any experiences we had.
So here we go!
(I hope someone else will join me here, LOL!)
BTW, Im now an East Tennessee Appalachian granny, so I figured I could start this thread in memory of nw_arizona_granny.
Im in. Need info for composting.
Prepping is great! We could actually solve most, if not all of our problems in this country if we just stocked up on piano wire. I can think of a million and one uses. And it can be reused, so its safe for the environment. Yes, this country sure could use some piano wire right about now.
One third dirt/leaves/lawn clippings, one third shredded newspapers, one third kitchen scraps minus meat. Water it in and turn it every few days. Worms are beneficial.
For goodness sakes, don’t ever bag your lawn clippings or leaves. Mow them into the lawn and don’t put chemical fertilizers on your lawn.
Me too!
When you’re canning jelly don’t throw out the pulp. Make it into preserves.
After you have the preserves, again, don’t throw out the leftovers. Mush the peelings and whatever leftovers around a colander to get every little bit and turn that into fruit butter. Frankly, I’d rather have fruit butter than jelly any day.
Give me ten
Hands down best videos on how to and the whys of food prep.

I’ve read that you don’t want too much grass. I tend to keep it half leaf matter (or more) than grass because I think I read before that it throws the nitrogen balance off too much. Maybe someone here could weigh in
I was referring more to composting than to mulching though
I will use only glass canning jars, or similar, like those large Vlasic pickle jars, my fav....
I'm going to store in these smaller amts because that is sufficient for my family here at my home, but also good for giving to adult children, friends who are in need...
I do use oxygen absorbers...
my basics are rice, salt, sugar, pasta, flour, and some store can items but I'm moving away from canned veggies and spaghetti sauce...canned veggies give little nutrition and I now worry about spaghetti sauce eating away the insides of cans...will buy sauce in glass jars from now on...
at one point I had 140 jars of tuna and several large cans as well, and many, many cans of salmon...
I bought too much progressive soup...
so you learn..
What? No string, rubber bands, or giant aluminum foil ball?
;-)
I think I used to be on this ping list, but looks like I’m not any more. Can you please add me? Thanks!!
Fertilizing your lawn is an admission that you have too much spare time. Pray instead for drought, nature’s own lawnmower.
Put me on your list please.
the front of the house gets the best sunshine and I think my maters would do better...
