ZURICH Swiss technology is due to hit new heights on Friday when the worlds steepest funicular line opens at one of its Alpine resorts.
Swiss President Doris Leuthard will officially open the $52.6 million project running from Schywz to the mountain village of Stoos, which lies 4,300 feet above sea level in central Switzerland.
The barrel-shaped carriages adjust their floors so passengers can still stand upright even as they climb towards the Alpine plateau at inclines of up to 110 percent.

At one point it is climbing at 110 degrees. Recall that
90 degrees is straight up.

at inclines of up to 110 percent % grade is different from degrees...
100% is 45 degrees (rise over run).

It doesn’t say 110°, but 110% grade. Percent grade is defined as the amount of feet in elevation versus the number of feet traveled forward; hence a 110% grade means a change in elevation of 110 feet for every 100 feet traveled horizontally. It’s a little less than 48° angle, maximum, or (in British gradient measurments) 1 in 1.1.

If you’re very particular about what
kind of fun you have, you are funicular.

Still, something over 45 degrees is quite steep!

It said 110%, not 110 degrees. Arctan 1.1 is about 47.72 degrees.

Interesting, but lacks the cachet of a cog railway...
...but probably safer and more comfortable.

I read that too. The article speaks of PERCENT, not degrees of “up”

Quebec City Funicular is 100%, or 45° angle, or 1:1.

Like the Gateway arch circular elevators in St. Louis on a much grander scale.
