Lateral are measured relative to the ground, not to the players. NDT is using obscure math jargon to obscure the point.
To: Impy
To follow up, let’s say both players are running at a constant speed of 10 ft/sec, and the trailing back is 2 yards (6 feet) behind the quarterback. So, if the ball takes more than 0.6 seconds to get to the running back, the running back is ahead of the point where the QB released the ball, which is now a forward pass, even though the QB is still ahead of the running back, and it looks like relative to QB and running back it went backwards.

I’ll be watching that game with a little more interest than usual. I want to see what Army will bring to the table in their bowl game against the Aztecs. Already have my tickets for that one. #goaztecs

My pigskin prognostications for this week:
- New Orleans at Atlanta: Atlanta is desperate. New Orleans isn't. The Saints keep winning but I sense some weakness. They got a gift from Washington three weeks ago, go beaten by the Rams, and bounced back against the Panthers. Not dominating though anymore. The home team that is desperate is usually a good bet. Atlanta Wins
- Chicago and Cincinnati: Last week the Bengals showed up for a football game and a no holds barred match of full contact roller derby broke out instead. They lost that one. This week they bounce back. Bengals Win
- Detroit at Tampa Bay: Tampa is toast, Detroit is close to it but I think they are the better squad and the more desperate. Lions Win
- Green Bay at Cleveland: Rodgers could come back soon, Pack needs wins desperately to keep themselves alive for his return. Can he save their season? Only if they win this week. Fortunately for cheeseheads, they will. Packers win
- Indianapolis at Buffalo: I cannot pick the Colts again this year. Buffalo wins
- Minnesota at Carolina: Can Minnesota win out? I doubt it. Is Case Keenum for real? Looks the part but I'm still skeptical. Can Carolina beat the Vikings? Desperate team at home theory kicking in again. Panthers win
- Oakland at Kansas City: Andy Reid decided to give up playcalling for this week. I've seen this before, usually that means his team will run the ball a little for once and the opposing defense will not expect that at all. Look for the Chef's to bounce back this week. Chefs win
- San Francisco at Houston: Colin Kaepernick was THIS close to winning Time Magazine Man of the Year, but lost to nobody in particular. In a show of solidarity, San Francisco loses too. Texans Win
- Dallas at NY Giants: Teams that quit on their head coach and then see him fired mid season sometimes bounce back with an emotional win to make a statement. But the Giants just don't have the weapons. Dallas wins
- NY Jets at Denver: Game of the week material here. Jets have played a bit better so I'll give them the edge. Jets Win
- Tennessee at Arizona: I think Tennessee is a mediiocre team but the Cardinals are a bad one. Titans Win
- Washington at LA Chargers: Chargers were left for dead in week four but they've been quietly stacking up wins and getting back in it. Redskins on the other hand are racking up embarassing losses. Chargers win
- Philadelphia at LA Rams: I said last week that I thought Philly was getting too cocky. They got their butts handed to them so that's over with. Rams are every bit as hot as Philly has been, this will be a good game. LA has no home field advantage so take that out of it. Philly is now trailing Vikings in the race to top seed and they need to bounce back lest they begin to doubt themselves. I think that even at 10-2 they are the more desperate team in this match. Eagles win
- Seattle at Jacksonville: Seattle is a two man team at this point (Russel Wilson and Bobby wagner) but they are two REALLY good players. Big win over Philly last week but honestly most of their offense was "wilson runs around then chucks it downfield and gets pass interference, do it again until you score". That model works at home where you get all the calls. Not so sure it plays in Jacksonville. On the other hand, Jaguars still have no offense. Going out on a limb here and saying Jaguars Win
- Baltimore at Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh got into a slug fest last week and now they get to face Baltimore. Stock up on Mercurochrome and Ben Gay, fellas. I still think Steelers Win
- New England at Miami: New England continues it's annual cake walk through the AFC East with a win in Miami. Jay Cutler will shrug and say "whatever".Patriots win
To: Impy
Week 14! Took a beating last week, but OTOH, my fantasy team had its best week of the season. Too little too late as I am already eliminated from the playoffs. But I'll take anything at his point. On to picks!
Thursday, Dec 7, 2017 (All times Eastern)
New Orleans at Atlanta 8:25 pm NFLN (& NBC) Mercedes-Benz Stadium One of the best games of the week and it's on Thursday night. Atlanta was totally shut down by the Vikings last week and the Saints rebounded from their loss to LA. I think the Saints reborn - rejuvenated - dominating running game, and the old reliable Drew Brees, are going to prove too much for the Falcons and Julio Jones. Saints.
Sunday, Dec 10, 2017
Chicago at Cincinnati 1:00 pm FOX Paul Brown Stadium Bengals will rebound from that extremely ugly loss Monday night and beat the Bears. Bengals.
Detroit at Tampa Bay 1:00 pm FOX Raymond James Stadium Despite last week's loss to the Ravens I still like Matthew Stafford and the Lions. Lions.
Green Bay at Cleveland 1:00 pm FOX FirstEnergy Stadium Don't look now but Brett Hundley actually had a good game last week. And the Browns are still in total disarray. Packers.
Indianapolis at Buffalo 1:00 pm CBS New Era Field Buffalo's playoff hopes are fading but I believe they will pull it together against the Colts. Bills.
Minnesota at Carolina 1:00 pm CBS Bank of America Stadium Minnesota... a stifling defense and Case Keenum. That's enough to hold off the Panthers. Vikings.
Oakland at Kansas City 1:00 pm CBS Arrowhead Stadium Can the free-falling Chiefs somehow stop the collapse? They are at home.... And although Oakland has shown a mini-resurgence ... I'm taking Kansas City until they win again! Even if that's in 2018! Chiefs.
San Francisco at Houston 1:00 pm FOX NRG Stadium The Niners won last week without scoring a TD, and with Jimmy Garapolo. Let the renaissance continue! Niners.
Dallas at N.Y. Giants 1:00 pm FOX MetLife Stadium The McAdoo Era is over in New York, as well as the Geno Smith experiment. But I don't think that will make a difference against a Cowboys team that bounced back to life last week. Cowboys.
N.Y. Jets at Denver 4:05 pm CBS Sports Authority Field at Mile High The Broncos are in as big a collapse as the Giants, whereas the Jets have shown an annoying habit of winning occasionally. Jets.
Tennessee at Arizona 4:05 pm CBS University of Phoenix StadiumTitans marching to the playoffs, Cardinals marching to mediocrity. Titans.
Washington at L.A. Chargers 4:05 pm CBS StubHub Center The Redskins may make a game of it, but the Chargers have come from 0 - 4 to 6 - 6 and this week climb above five-hundred. Chargers.
Philadelphia at L.A. Rams 4:25 pm FOX Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Tough loss against the Seahags last week, even if the Iggles mostly self-inflicted it. Now another West Coast tough match-up. But this week the Philly Boys are up to the task and I like Carson Wentz over Jared Goff. Eagles.
Seattle at Jacksonville 4:25 pm FOX EverBank Field Seahawks have been doing well, but Russell Wilson cannot keep doing it all by himself. Jax has a great D and I think that will be the difference. Jaguars.
Baltimore at Pittsburgh 8:30 pm NBC Heinz Field The Ravens are on a mini-roll, having won three in a row. I'm still not a believer though. The Steelers keep winning games on last second kicks. Maybe their mojo runs out this week? Yeah I think so. Ravens.
Monday, Dec 11, 2017
New England at Miami 8:30 pm ESPN Hard Rock Stadium Patriots have won eight in a row. Miami ain't going to stop that run. Patriots.
And finally.....
GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!

Thanks for the thread Impy.
From Pittsburgh, the news on Ryan Shazier is not good. Prayers for him. To the right wing virtue signalers, he was not a kneeler.
My wife (neurologist) recognized it immediately. She thought it was a C7 burst fracture. We will see.
