Budweiser sending barley to space in hopes of learning how to brew beer on Mars

Budweiser wasn’t kidding about its plans to brew “the first beer on Mars.”

After announcing its initiative at the South by Southwest conference in March, Budweiser is reportedly taking its next (small) steps toward accomplishing its out-of-this-world goal by sending beer-making grains — namely, barley — into space later this year.

According to a press release, in early December SpaceX will be delivering the shipment of barley to the International Space Station, where it will remain in orbit for a month.

Once back on Earth, the barley will be analyzed in order to determine how the grain reacts to microgravity environments.

Budweiser’s “innovation team” will also experiment with germinating the exposed barley seeds.

“Budweiser is always pushing the boundaries of innovation and we are inspired by the collective American Dream to get to Mars,” said Budweiser Vice President Ricardo Marques in a statement.

“We are excited to begin our research to brew beer for the red planet.”

Of all the real problems we have in the world, this ranks really really low on the list.

First things first. Maybe Bud should find a way to brew beer on this planet.

It’s a cover story; they are really looking for where all of the NFL fans have gone. Bud just can’t believe they all just turned off the TV’s and found something else to do.

One lame stunt for Budweiser, one huge embarrassment for space exploration.

So now we are to think in terms of Budweiser as part of terraforming Mars?

What DNA of microbes will the barley samples take with them, or what possible microbes might they encounter on Mars. What mutations might result when earth microbes meet Martian soil, air and sun energy that gets through its thin atmosphere? And what mutations might result when Mars microbes meet biological life that is new to them?

All such experiments of moving earth-life to Mars should be handled under extremely controlled conditions by scientists, where every biological input and output is identified and measured, and watched for some great period of time.

Brewing beer on Mars is not on any serious science list that any taxpayer money ought to go into.

“Advanced solar panels and more efficient electronics will make Mars stations more reliable for long term habitation, but you can’t eat electricity. People need food. People also need medicine.

Now what could be grown indoors, that would be an efficient source of nutrients and medicine for settlers?

You guessed it. Cannabis.

It would be much more efficient to grow your own medicine than spend millions of dollars to request a supply run from Earth. Especially a medicine that treats so many different ailments and issues.

No other plant is more complete in the nutrients needed for a healthy body.

In addition, growing hemp on Mars would provide a valuable building material, source of oxygen, and mind calming reassurance to people in a strange environment.

Strains of cannabis will likely be the first plants to successfully depend solely on natural Martian sunlight for survival.

On a planet so far from the Sun, leaves would need to be dark to absorb more light. Vietnamese strains have nearly black leaves. ...”

Would you volunteer to go to Mars?

How much would you pay for Green Herb grown on the Red Planet?
