Its estimated that there are more than 310 million firearms in the United States. Thats a firearm for nearly every man, woman and child. But only a minority of Americans owns the bulk of these guns. Pew Research Center polling shows that around 37 percent of Americans report that an adult in their household owns a gun. Perhaps weve passed the point where we can usefully ask why some Americans are armed to the teeth and others arent. We champion our Second Amendment. It should remain inviolable. To neuter it would incite war. At what point, however, does the unabated and loosely regulated domestic arms race render us all potential victims? In the hands of a black in Chicago, one is too many since they seem to murder each other at an extremely alarming rate in Chicago.
Reminds me of the cartoon where a guy is buying a new gun at the gun store and he and the sales clerk are laughing it up because the guy’s wife asked him if he were going to sell his old one.
If you have to ask that question ...you don't have enough.
It's like asking how much a Rolls Royce costs,,,if you ask that question....you can't afford it.
“At what point, however, does the unabated and loosely regulated domestic arms race render us all potential victims?”
Bad news - all of us are potential victims.
That’s why you should get a gun!
This is America. We have a Bill or Rights. Allowing the “government” to tell us how many guns we can have is a violation of the Bill of Rights. What’s next? Telling car collectors how many cars they are allowed to own? After all, thousands of Americans are killed each year by cars.
You can only shoot 1 at a time.
You can only carry about 3 at a time.
Any more than that, and the remainder are little more than collector’s items, or available to friends/family/neighbors who find themselves in need & without.
Yes, a minority of Americans collectively own >300,000,000 guns and own over a trillion rounds of ammunition. If that were a problem, you’d know; obviously it isn’t a problem.
If you’re looking at a large population (tens of millions) who cause absolutely no harm, and you hypothesize what kind of problem they could be, they’re not the ones to be worried about - you are.
What evidence is there that the number of guns one owns has a correlation with criminality? None, but it’s the idea that bugs the left, rational or not.
What is this “enough” you speak of?
In a standard distribution of anything—indeed any distribution that is not absolutely uniform—a minority or those possessing always possesses the majority of the thing possessed. Really basic statistical analysis.
I agree with that.
I remember Texas Sen Phil Graham famously saying I own more guns than I need, but less than I want.
I also agree with that.
No kidding.
Aw crap. I have a really good memory.... guess I need more guns ;-)
If you have NO guns, you are already a victim....................
I have more guns than I proably need.
But not as many as I want...
Im sure if you give about a half hour I could name most or all guns I currently own. Not exactly off the top of my head. I guess I need more.
Who was the [Texas] politician who said:
**I have as many guns as I need, but not as many as I want.**
Well, that ain’t enough. Kinda like asking chuck norris (who stays away from my town, just sayin’) how many push ups can you do? All of them. +1
The problem is not the Americans who own more guns than they can use at one time. The problem is the 63% of American households that are unarmed potential victims. Clearly we need more guns in the hands of more families along with common sense training in how to use them.
