Actress Reese Witherspoon has revealed that she was sexually assaulted by a director when she was 16 years old, the latest in a series of claims about abuse in the film industry.
This has been a really hard week for women in Hollywood, for women all over the world, and a lot of situations and a lot of industries are forced to remember and relive a lot of ugly truths, Witherspoon said at an event in Beverley Hills this week.
I have my own experiences that have come back to me very vividly and I find it really hard to sleep, hard to think, hard to communicate a lot of the feelings that Ive been having about anxiety, honestly, the guilt for not speaking up earlier.
She divulged, I have my own experiences that have come back to me very vividly and I find it really hard to sleep, hard to think, hard to communicate a lot of the feelings that Ive been having about anxiety, honestly, the guilt for not speaking up earlier. Witherspoon, who debuted on the silver screen at 15, continued, [I feel] true disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old and anger at the agents and the producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment.
The Academy Award-winning actress went on to claim that the incident was just one of a number of times she had been sexually abused throughout her career. I wish that I could tell you that was an isolated incident in my career, but sadly it wasnt, she said. Ive had multiple experiences of harassment and sexual assault and I dont speak about them very often.

There’s gotta be an element of ‘Me Too’ going around. I bet some of the ‘me too’ gang gladly went to the casting couch for the furtherment of their careers.
Common denominator? Nobody is naming names.
This is a lovely crisis to cover up what happened in Las Vegas.
I’d LOVE to see just ONE of these Hollywood women come forward and explain why they were silent and complicit for so long.
The fact is they, and in many cases, their families, wanted the money and fame AND HAD NO PROBLEM with what they had to do to get it.
Evil cannot flourish without consent.
This smells too much like yet another low down game to score something.
Did she say she was assaulted on set? (Didn’t say the word rape). Could have been a director who didn’t give her the part.
Yeah. That’s the one I’d pick of the obvious choices. But there’s no reason to assume it’s one she did a movie with.
Names or it didn’t happen.
I remember. That's a risk. Maybe it's time to man-up and clean the Augean Stables. Frankly, I don't care if it's Hollywood or Wall Street or Main Street...this isn't the way real men act, and it's time for Deplorables to reclaim the mantle of "compassion" from the statists.
So — looking ahead — if EVERY female in Hollywood was raped and assaulted and touched — and every male in Hollywood did it/ where does it stop? Are women really always victims? Aren’t they sometimes complicit? Who is making money on this? Where do the Talking Points come from?
Still curious about this - WHEN did this current hysteria/ accusations cycle begin? Who started it? What was THEIR motive?? Reminds me of all the other whupped-up blather that becomes headlines and sweeps ‘everybody’ along in its path.
I’m very resistant to being caught up in anybody’s hyperbole, frankly.
“Understand that every female (and every child and likely most males) have done well in Hollywood because of the casting couch.”
And I think it is safe to say not only in Hollywood, but also in the music and modeling businesses as well.
Unless she is willing to indulge she’s possibly libelling a lot of people. How many will come out and scream “It wasn’t me!”
She might be a liberal, but my heart goes out to her... what a horrible crime against a child.
That is the stupidest synopsis I have ever seem. There is NO danger in being a bone marrow donor.
Maybe it was started to get the heat off Hillary. It was the NY Times. They had to know what was coming in
Out today about Hillary and Mueller.
Might want to look at which of her films were in production while she was 16 (and probably came out a year later or so.)
And where were mommy and daddy?
Did she say, “Hi, Reese! Les be friends!”
Right, that's been my experience, just ask my wife.
“And I think it is safe to say not only in Hollywood, but also in the music and modeling businesses as well.”
Lordy, now someone will go after Melania.

It appears to me that some seem surprised about the revelations regarding the activities of those involved in the movie industry.
The abuse and mistreatment of women and youths (male & female) in movie industry has been there since day one. It appears that society just did not want to talk about it or deal with it, for the most part.
Note: porn movies (silent) before the ‘talkies’ were quite popular in the ‘20’s. When I was a kid in the early ‘60’s I can remember ‘drive-ins’ showing ‘X’ rated films.
The video entertainment industry has always been a cesspool of abusive and sexist behavior, because sex sells and those in the sex trade know that it is relatively easy money. And no one gender was worse than the other when it came to exploitation. Prostitution is possibly the oldest profession.
My mother has a friend, an older movie star, who started out at the end of the ‘silent’ era, and she told my mother some of the women working in the industry, treated the young males and females as meat for the bosses.
If the behavior of the moguls and actors of the movie industry is acceptable to you than don’t act indignant and lie about it by acting as though in shock that such occurs.
If it is not acceptable don’t support it. Read books, make on use of the canvas of your mind for imagery, learn something.
On that note, movies about history rarely do it well; ie, the William Wallace in ‘Braveheart’ was not the real William Wallace.
I have not personally owned a TV for about 30 years, I have not been to a movie theater in almost as long. I do not rent or pay for video’s. Occasionally there are films (mostly science fiction where I am intrigued by the special effects or some comedies) that I may watch if the opportunity presents itself, but I never pay for the chance. I do not financially support the video entertainment industry.
(I will get children’s movies for my kids & grandkids but if they cross the line in any way they are out, my kids will attest to the fact the I had no qualms about destroying what I viewed as trash- music & movies, and I am not religious)
For the matter I am not a professional sports voyeur either. I do not attend professional games of any kind nor do I watch them.
Well that is my rant of the subject
I think that by listening to the different actor spout off about there assault and the year it happened we can figure out all the bad players in Hollywood are from the minimal info they give about the person. all you need to do is go to imdb and find out who the directors and producers were the year it happened that worked with the actress.
