Australian farmers are using human waste as fertilizer. And it's working.

The bio-solids have become particularly important this year. According to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, Australia experienced its hottest winter on record. That, coupled with frequent frosts, have made it difficult for farmers to grow their crops.

But the sewage sludge is more than a simple fertilizer. It's also good for the environment. That's because plant operators are able to make use of an often-ignored waste product.

"We beneficially reuse 100 percent of the bio solids that we generate every year, so that's about 180,000 tons of solid matter," said Gavin Landers of Sydney Water.

This reporter needs to be given a free tour of his local water treatment plants. He will be stunned when they explain either the field adjacent to it or the sludge trucks going in and out all day long.

Then watch him puke when he is introduced to where all the ‘clean’ water goes.

The tomatoes near our sewage treatment plant were as big as cantaloupes.

The poop gas can be collected and used as fuel to light the family farm.
Same as landfill gas.

In the small town I grew up in, there were always tomatoes growing out at the sewer plant.

Aging.

That is why you compost.

The heat it produces gets the smell and the nasty microbes out.

Also kills any weed seed.

I think that depends on whether it is free manure or processed.

I lived near Johnson Air Station from 1959-1963. I spent a great deal of time in the paddies.

Good point about the drugs. We were using aged/processed waste treatment product back in the 60’s but it was on ornamental plants.

I think I’de be hesitant to use it today with the increased use of drugs by the population as a whole.

Bacteria is killed in the processing as it is treated to over 158F. But the drug residue could be a problem.

Something else to research today.

Human diseases present in feces are more easily spread this way.

Years ago, some farmers learned that ordinary packing peanuts make great soil enhancers, because they both loosen the soil and capture water, which is then available for plant roots so they require less irrigation.

They soon found a source of peanuts that were both non-toxic and would slowly biodegrade. Their last effort was a type of peanut that would also contain specific minerals needed by that type of soil, also considering having something in them that would suppress bad nematodes and fungi.

Not exactly new, honey wagons have been around a long time and they didn’t need any processing plant.
