Not a big baseball fan. This isn't newsworthy. I'm not pimping a blog. I know not many people care. I also know there are more important things to talk about. Hurricanes. North Korea. Global Cooling. Healthcare. Tax Reform. Pizza...definitely pizza. Trump's Tweets - and he put out a mother lode of them today.
But I'm sitting here in a Long Island bar, Millers Ale House in Lake Grove, and they have this game on with Red Sox ace Chris Sale pitching and the stands are pretty much empty. Just thought I'd point that out.
Not a big baseball fan but I never remember a game that had this few people in the stands.
Those Cleveland Indians...they have now won 25 of the last 26 games. How amazing is that? Maybe they draw a bigger crowd.
Grew up in East Boston so I remember going to Fenway as a kid in the 1970s. Bleacher seats were $1.25 and I could easily afford that with my paper route money. I’d go by myself so by the end of the game, I’d work myself through the park where sometimes I’d be sitting in an abandoned seat right in the front row. Good times.
A few years back, I took my two kids and wife to the game and spent over $300 all told.
I have been following the Texas Rangers for several years and have noticed (via TV) similar at both home and away games — stadiums with thousands of empty seats. That has included weekday and weekend and night games.
I surmise that they get their income from the networks who broadcast the games.
Of course, when teams are playing well and having a winning season, they do have greater attendance for home games.
The lower fan attendance could also be due to massive overload. They play 160+ games per season which is basically 6 games per week.
Ownership already have sold many of these empty seats to Corp entities...
Basically a paid for empty seat..
Um it’s not a special place. It’s pretty ordinary as far as ballparks go. If you are in the area take in a game in Philly and you’ll see Camden Yards is very outdated.
Just checked the beer menu. No Spotted Cow but they do have Spider Bite Second Bite IPA and Cigar City Madura Nitro.
Football tomorrow.
They played 162 games when Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, and Roberto Clemente graced the field. I don’t recall anyone thinking the season was too long back then.
Baseball has no personality, no lore, no announcers, and costs way too much for the crappy product it displays.
“Now I found out there are large baseballs and small baseballs and that some people are the fans of these different size baseballs.”
The big ones are called “Chicago baseballs”. Most people outside Chicago don’t know this.
If you are one of the few there it’s a great time to corral foul balls.
My company has boxes at CitiField, Yankee Stadium and MetLife Stadium. I go there with clients and I can tell you that nobody even pays attention to the game. Everybody on their cellphones taking selfies and texting “guess where I am”
As a kid, I used to buy a program and score the game with a number two pencil.
Really? Where is the best part of Baltimore these days?
Crup and Kipe are good in San Francisco, as well has Jon Miller had them for years, it is not the same in San Diego.
Season is fine, too many playoff rounds - wish they played day games on the weekend too in Oct.
No personalities.
Look I know a lot of these Dominican players are talented, but they are are interchangeable and all seem the same.
Decent selection, not as good as Yard House,
Not even close to the "worst part" of town. I always laugh driving by there; it's like they planned it on purpose for the 'Burb folk to make a quick exit. But... Baltimore is Baltimore, so your point is well taken.
Went to games at Dodger Stadium when it was new. $1 to get into the nosebleed section behind home plate. You didn’t even get a ticket, just a token to put in the turnstile. Rain check? It’s L.A.—it never rains in the summer. This year went to a game at Busch Stadium. Tickets were free, but it still cost about $100 for parking, sodas, hot dogs, etc. I see families and wonder how they can afford it. Takes a lot of the fun out of it.
When I was young I would make a score sheet and keep track of the game. Sometimes the other guys in the neighborhood would bring theirs out and we would compare the games. No television in any of our homes. Had to do it by radio.
Wouldn’t trade any of that youth for anything they have today.
The older I get the more following sports seems like a gigantic waste of time.
The baseball season is way too long and Football has gone political which is a huge turnoff. The days of Ronnie Lott blowing guys up and Jim Burt smashing QB’s are long gone and it seems like my enjoyment of that game disappeared with them.
The inner harbor is nice if you come by boat and don't mind tourists.
I have never gone to games very often, so when I do go, it’s always a treat. I like the atmosphere and I watch the game. I have been on employee outings and have seen people like the ones you describe. I guess for them it is just a time to eat, drink, socialize, and not have to work.
