This is the worst fall for new TV shows in the decade I’ve been a professional TV critic. And it’s hard to find one much worse in all the years I’ve been cognizant of “new fall TV” as a concept, since the late ’80s.
The comedies didn’t make me laugh. The dramas made me roll my eyes. Even with the boom in platforms making new TV, there’s but one show I’d recommend wholeheartedly and a smattering of others that made me say, “There could be something there if they work out the kinks.” The vast, vast majority of the new shows — whether on broadcast or cable or streaming — are just plain bad.
Now, to be sure, there are some heavily anticipated shows I have yet to see. Star Trek: Discovery, for instance, hasn’t sent out screeners to critics. (That CBS All Access is playing so coy with the show isn’t a great sign, but with a major project like this, it’s entirely possible the post-production process is taking longer than usual.) But I’ve still seen the vast majority of new series — and they’re bad.
So when people ask me what new shows they should watch, it takes but a few seconds to say, “Hey, The Deuce is good!” But if they’re not fans of David Simon or James Franco, or if they don’t have HBO, well … ABC’s The Mayor is pretty charming. Fox’s Ghosted has a good enough cast that I guess it should pull itself together eventually. CBS’s S.W.A.T. is certainly ambitious for a remake of an old TV show, even if it’s not all there yet…

Ironside was recently on the Vision (granny) TV channel up in my locale. Agree with you, a very good series. I am kind of partial to Fran Belding (Elizabeth Baur), but Eve Whitfield (Barbara Anderson) was also nice to look at, lol. This channel also has had Columbo, McMillan and Wife, and McCloud on Thursday nights for the Mystery Movie feature.
Amazon prime. Then add AcornTv. That should get you the brit mystery shows. Some are on Netflix as well. Since I use Amazon prime anyhow for purchasing stuff it’s pretty cheap entertainment.
Yup,the Brits have done some good drama and police shows.Downton was great...Father Brown is very good.My favorite police show was Inspector George Gently and I've just developed a liking for Endeavour.
Another one I really like is Death In Paradise...the first couple of seasons,that is.

The souped up paddy wagon was cooler to me than the van that showed up later.
That sounds like my kind of channel.
I have many of the DVDs of those shows that are in release.
McCloud and the rest of Ironside would be nice to get.
We watch “The Middle” and really enjoy it. While it has been cancelled, there will be a ninth season and the first episode will be shown Tuesday, October 3rd :)

The north is the worst side, the west is the best.
Since the shows are selected, they tend to run the better ones. It's nice to be able to recogize some of the actors and actresses in other things. Mads Mikkelsen, Audrey Fleurot, Gregory Fitoussi, Caroline Proust, Len Cariou, and Terrance Hill.
And I just recognized the Stasi grandmother from The Weissensee Saga in Toni Erdmann
I get all the British programming I want from UK torrent sites. They also offer a lot of crime dramas/mysteries from other countries.
I used to be Mr. Douglas until he was banned for being a retread. :)
It’s what some of my neighbors called me the first couple of years we lived here. But I NEVER rode my tractor in a three piece suit. A simple colored shirt and tie with a sport coat is acceptable, though.

And the superheroines can beat up eight guys and not get hit once or smear their makeup. They are emotional robots. The guys meanwhile, are incompetent dolts who can’t win a fight and are routinely on the ground being battered in their faces. Arrow is the prime example. And then there’s the Flash, who sits around and cries.
Good grief, it’s terrible.

If the shows were only a buck or two that would be palatable. However they charge $4 or more for an hour long episode. They can KMA.
Was thrilled to find The Twilight Zone and the original Star trek on Prime!
New editions to the viewing and a lot of fun.
Not sure what your personal tastes are but you can buy episodes of certain HBO or Showtime ( to name just a few ) programs to see if you like them. I would not have discovered some real gems without that option.
Funny, Hill Street Blues closed out "must-see" Thursday nights. Tuesday closed with St. Elsewhere, which gave us Ed Begley, Jr., Howie Mandel, and Denzel Washington.
