A new era for the Port of New York and New Jersey started this morning with the arrival of the largest ship to ever stop over on the East Coast.
The CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt sailed under the newly-elevated Bayonne Bridge today on its maiden voyage to the United States, as locals gathered at Dennis P. Collins Park to watch the massive ship's arrive.
Four times larger than the Statue of Liberty and the length of five football fields, the Theodore Roosevelt can carry more than 14,400 20-foot equivalent units (TEU). Owned by French shipping group CMA CGM, the ship made its way to New Jersey after navigating the new Panama Canal locks Aug. 22 and becoming the largest capacity ship to do so.

Economy picking up?
Noticeably more semis on the NYS Thruway these days. Also freight frequency on CSX mainline through Central Yew York is pumping more than in many moons.
They just need to make sure there are no Naval vessels nearby.
But other photos showed it going under with plenty of clearance.
Very cool.
thanks for posting this. I go over the Goethals everyday. can’t wait till that one is done.
Wow! Big sucker.
Thanks for the post
I live near a CSX line in California - and have never seen so much train traffic as I’ve seen in the past few months.
Thankfully, the state recently moved the tracks up and over the main road so those very long freight trains don’t back up traffic for blocks.
Still, they’re cool to watch and b/c the crossing was taken out, I no longer hear the train horns. Too bad.
My grandparents lived near the tracks in Central California and the clickity-clack sounds and train horns are comforting to me, LOL.
I believe new container ships will becoming on line that can carry 18,000 TEUs and that plans are to built by 2025 several container ships that can carry 20,000 TEUs
I remember sailing on Radiance of the Seas years ago and passing under the Lions Gate bridge as we entered Vancouver Harbor. The ship could only clear the bottom of the bridge by about 3 meters, and only during low tide. It was pretty “interesting.”
Great, a larger sailing brick...
“I gotcher Big Apple RIGHT HERE!”
That’s a BIG ship!
Looks like a cruise ship I was on a few years ago.
eh,...I’ve seen bigger.
Chinese money built the expanded Panama Canal locks and dredging. And, at a single phone call from Peking, they will be closed. No declaration of war, just an instant blockade.
There goes the trade imbalance!
Looks like the kind of shipping company Donald Trump would own. Every single container you see in those photos has the CMA-CGM logo on it. Very cool.
