Gene Stick Michael, a beloved Yankees figure who helped build the late-90s dynasty, has died from a heart attack. He was 79.
Michael was the Yankees manager in 1981-82 and the GM from 1991-95, when he drafted Derek Jeter and guided the organization during George Steinbrenners suspension.
Michael was the true architect of the teams that would win four World Series in five years from 1996-2000. Beyond Jeter, he drafted or signed the entire Core Four: Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada.
After his run as GM, Michael stuck with the organization, serving as the vice-president of major league scouting until 2003, when he was promoted to vice president and senior adviser.

The real Yankee dynasty was the 1950s. The Yankees won the pennant in:
1950
1951
1952
1953
1955
1956
1957
1958
Yes. I watched the 50s 60s dynasty. What a great team
But after the unions and union contracts made it near impostor a single team to build to super levels, George built to 2 separate dynasties. Both in the late 70s (Billy Ball). And the magnificent teams managed by Joe Torre from1996 through the early 2000s.

When I saw the headline I wondered how someone who died now at 79 could have devised the “Yankee dynasty” my mind went, back in the 50s. BUT, he did great with the Yankees’ 2nd Dynasty. RIP, sir.
Same here. It wasn’t IF the Yanks were going to win the penant. It was WHEN. I grew up in the Bronx in the 50s around 4-5 Miles from Yankee stadium. If you happened to be a Giants or Dodgers fan in that neighborhood. You kept it to yourself.
2nd dynasty. 3rd or fourth.
There was a team with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back in the 20s/30s who almost never lost.
RIP Great American.
A monkey could have managed those teams. Steinbrenner had tons more money than everyone else. Pretty much bought the World Series.
But a monkey would not have prevented Steinbrenner from trading away Jeter, Pettite, Posada,Rivera and Williams for older veteran players circa 1991-95. Stick was the one who made sure those players stayed in the system.
Oh so your a socialist. Very well.
Money turned a team he bought for millions into a term worth billions. It’s called capitalism.
That’s ok. Steinbrenner’s stupid friggin kids don’t get it. They’d rather support soccer and tear up the field.
RIP Mr. Michael...you were one of my favorites,I will always be thankful....
Not hardly. And yes and I know what capitalism is. Never said I disagreed with what he did.

True. But I missed that dynasty, slightly before my time. You know, history begins the day we’re born ;)
RIP.
Slightly before my time too. My Dad also grew up in the Bronx. As I was a huge fan of Mickey Mantle et al, he was a huge fan of Babe Ruth et al. I wuz schooled. Dad hated that Roger Maris got 61 HRs in 1961. He was a big proponent of the asterisk *. Me and my uncle, his younger brother, would argue with him for hours. He wouldn't give in. Being a WW2 marine and NYPD cop.....he didn't know, ‘giving in’.
