Thousands of Texans may finally be able to return to their flood-ravaged properties in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
But for the more than 1,500 four-legged evacuees crammed into the state's largest animal rescue center there are simply no homes for them to go back to.
Austin Pets Alive! has become the last refuge for hundreds of stray or abandoned cats and dogs that were plucked from danger from flooded neighborhoods and animal shelters across southeast Texas.
Their staff have toiled day and night with thousands of volunteers to coordinate rescue efforts and bring the homeless critters back to their Austin headquarters.

I made a donation to a TX animal shelter, realizing that there would be thousands of displaced pets. So many perished, as well as livestock. I wish I could help more. And I hope that my donation to humans in TX helped some folks out, too. I cannot imagine having one’s home destroyed, or filled with filth and water damage. My heart goes out to all there.
Some of these pets were abandoned but not as much as they think I wonder. Often before a natural disaster pets will disappear because they know it’s coming. Then they try to come home after what ever is going to happen has happened. Then these people find them and take them to shelters.
Remember last year when West Virginia was flooded? My pets acted very strange that day. All of them wanted to come inside and were crying something terrible until I brought them in. They did not calm down until they were with me and even then the cats hid under the bed and the dog never left my side. Had never seen them act this way before or since.
They are vehicles of consciousness just like we are. All is the same. from a blade of grass, to what we are. Consciousness is one unit of. A sub set of what the universe is. One unit of us. Is every living thing.
For the record. Racism against whites is as bad as racism against blacks.
We have received some at the Humane Society of North Texas. Which is amazing given how full it is. Our shelters are packed. Animals are being sent all over right now.

My husband and I are willing to foster a displaced Golden Retriever or two until the owner(s) can get back on their feet down there. We already have two, so we aren’t looking for more on a permanent basis. Our spoiled boys would be miserable in a shelter. We would love for someone to watch them in a nice home if we found ourselves in that situation. Not sure if this option is being formally offered.
The German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (CA) made a donation to help the dogs in Texas and made a commitment to bring at least one GSD to California, even though we are strapped for cash and overloaded with other dogs needing help in local shelters.

Stories like this make me think it’s good to have pets chipped. Our cats never go outside and can’t get loose; but I’d certainly do it if I had a dog.

I have 5 rescue dogs and four rescue cats. We’re also fostering two puppies and a cat for the Animal Rescue Center. We’re in the projected path of Irma and we’re trying to figure out how we can take all the animals if we evacuate.
Most hotels and shelters won’t allow that many animals.
I’m a bit late to the game on this thread due to taking over care of 2 grandkids in north Texas so their daddy can work for FEMA north of Houston. I’ve got a travesty to add tho.
Last weekend my daughter went with a group of volunteers out of a Cooke county (Texas) VFW to rescue horses. Several businesses in the Gainesville area donated hundreds of pounds of livestock feed and dog food for the group to haul down. Their destination was Jefferson County. (Beaumont) They had a contact person in Beaumont for rescuing horses and cattle, towed horse trailers down to bring rescues to safe pasture. Pickups and horse trailers loaded with feed and a few extra donations for humans from a church.
Long drive from Gainesville, TX down to Beaumont. Daughter drove all night Friday night after working a full day Friday. Got to Jefferson county at 7 A.M. Saturday morning and the bleeding heart ASPCA had convinced the local sheriff’s office not to allow any other animal rescue efforts into the county. They were putting down horses and cattle in flooded regions as well as putting down all pit bulls regardless of legal registration and ownership of said dogs. (I know pits are questionable to some folks but owners were not given any option to claim their legally housed and owned pets.)
Three veterinarians and one non ASPCA rescue outfit were forcibly closed, their equipment seized by the ASPCA and the personnel escorted from the livestock and pets they were sheltering by the sheriff at the behest of the ASPCA.
When my daughter tried to deliver hundreds of pounds of dog food donated by Munster National to the independent pet rescue the ASPCA/sheriff attempted to confiscate the food. They reportedly (by one of the local veterinarians) were destroying most donated dog food because it didn’t meet the specifications of the ASPCA. When my daughter refused to relinquish the food the ASPCA told her they only accepted cash donations anyway.
My daughter did not witness the killing of the horses in floods but she spoke with a veterinarian and shelter person who said they witnessed that.
I’m not on Facebook but I guess outrage broke out over that last Friday and Saturday. Due to that the ASPCA then began threatening other rescue operations with seeing that their 501C3 (i think) status be revoked. Because of threats by that foul organization many truthful Facebook posts were pulled.
I have seen news reports from TV and print out of Houston where the ASPCA has denied these allegations. They are lying. The person is Gainesville who organized the rescue effort last weekend is not a non-profit so not concerned about any revoked gubmint standing and they’ve been communicating about this by word of mouth here.
I am confident that the above reports are true. I am not certain but heard that the Dallas/north Texas ASPCA has even cut ties with their Houston counterparts over this. Never been a fan of the ASPCA myself but this news should really be known.
