Every family's history holds its secrets, for good and for bad.
For comedian Chelsea Handler, the biggest questions lay with the fact that her maternal grandfather fought for the Nazi regime in World War II.
In a new episode of TLC's Who Do You Think You Are, Handler, 38, discovers exactly what role her grandfather, Karl Stoecker, played in one of history's most atrocious genocides.
And growing up, Handler had no idea that her grandfather - a 'very, very strong man' she describes as having a 'sense of humour' - had a dark past.
In the episode, she reveals that he was taken as a prisoner of war to America, where he likely stayed in Montana for several years.
'When he went back to Germany, he was very eager to come and take his family and move them back to the United States,' Handler says.

My 90+ year old grandmother, before she suffered severe dementia, was starting to recall and repeat, over and over again, the story of a local hairdresser in Connecticut was was widely believed to be a Nazi informant. Her shop got burned down. She never talked about it until she was of VERY advanced years. Somehow, I suspect she had something to do with it.

You should kill yourself Chels. You need to atone for your grandfather’s hatred of blacks, jews, gays, Asians and Hispanics.
On my mother’s side, Italian-American, and on my father’s, German-American. My oder uncles served in the 8th Army Air Force, the 82nd Airborne, and the 3rd Army. But, what would it say about me if they had not been Americans, but had served in the German and Italian military?
If Chelsea Handler’s grandfather served honorably, she has nothing to be ashamed of.
It is racist to blame an entire people for the actions of their government, especially when that government suspends elections and controls the flow of information. We, on our side of the political spectrum, are not racist. We do not hate the Germans or Italians or the Japanese, which is why we were able to bring about a lasting peace in Europe and in Asia. We, the U.S., did that. We not only won the war, we won the peace, because we did not seek to impose harsh terms on the vanquished.
Speaking of the Germans and the Japanese, right now I am feeling the love for Japan, since their Prime Minister stood with us in our confrontation with North Korea. As for Germany, not so much. Chancellor Merkel, your country did not deserve the treatment you received from us. You should think about that before criticizing our President.

I have ancestors that fought in the Civil War. Some were Union some were Confederate (and some of these were brothers).
I lost two great great grandfathers in the Civil War. If there was a debt owed, it was paid in full by their blood.

This is where it gets tricky when we conflate things. There is much to admire about Germany but of course there are a lot of problems as well. The same can be said about any nation or group or whatever even America. Trying to find the right balance in how to deal with anything in life is to some extent what we debate here on FR.
