Every family's history holds its secrets, for good and for bad.
For comedian Chelsea Handler, the biggest questions lay with the fact that her maternal grandfather fought for the Nazi regime in World War II.
In a new episode of TLC's Who Do You Think You Are, Handler, 38, discovers exactly what role her grandfather, Karl Stoecker, played in one of history's most atrocious genocides.
And growing up, Handler had no idea that her grandfather - a 'very, very strong man' she describes as having a 'sense of humour' - had a dark past.
In the episode, she reveals that he was taken as a prisoner of war to America, where he likely stayed in Montana for several years.
'When he went back to Germany, he was very eager to come and take his family and move them back to the United States,' Handler says.

Families know these things
Oh the drama
“...Handler, 38,”
Holy crap. Haven’t seen her in years, but even back then, she looked 48.
We are not responsible for the actions of our ancestors.
Possibly not. She was raised as a Jew in what she calls a “nice Jewish neighborhood” in Joisey and I doubt her Jewish father knew of his father-in-law’s dark past.
HAHAHAHAHA HA. Apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
We need to wipe everything that he did from the face of the Earth!!!!! Do I need a sarcasm tag?
As if any genocides are not atrocious.
We are not responsible for the actions of our ancestors.
Nor escape them as an element of our temperament.
Somehow if I were to discover that my grandfather was a KGB executioner it would not affect my own existence or personality. My wife was an avid genealogist for some years and did a pretty detailed study of her and my forebears. She found a bunch of characters that would give the snowflakes severe palpitations and perhaps render them immobile in their safe place cocoons but for us it was just as good as finding kings and princes. It is interesting and fun. So I come from beggars and brigands as well as canal diggers and lots of other less than stellar ancestors. For us it adds conversational subjects. I see no cause to hide these things or to abase myself because my ancestors were not aristocracy. Horse thieves are bad actors in their own time but make cool ancestors. Same with NAZIs and pirates.
HE! ...or at least write “s/he”. Calling this MAN a woman is accepting the premise of gender change!
He would have hated President Trump too.
You may have noticed that this article is from 2013. Yes, she looked older than she is, no matter the year.
So her grandfather was a swastika-wearing-full-fledged Nazi racist...this explains so much about her...
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah.....................man, that’s just TOO funny.....she’s literally a Nazi SPAWN!.........ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahA..............
I guess it’s time to blow up her Twitter then ahem...”confront” her on Social Media, correct?
Isn’t that how the Left does it?
I can’t imagine her wanting it exposed on national tv. But you’re right, how could she not have known?
well that’s quite the conundrum for the lefties’ besties...shun or forgive history as a different time? decisions decisions
“We are not responsible for the actions of our ancestors.”
Unfortunately, a zillion liberal think otherwise, of white males.
Chelsea Handler, an uber-liberal, will now likely get to experience what that kind of irrational bias and hate feels like.
