On my mother’s side, Italian-American, and on my father’s, German-American. My oder uncles served in the 8th Army Air Force, the 82nd Airborne, and the 3rd Army. But, what would it say about me if they had not been Americans, but had served in the German and Italian military?

It is racist to blame an entire people for the actions of their government, especially when that government suspends elections and controls the flow of information. We, on our side of the political spectrum, are not racist. We do not hate the Germans or Italians or the Japanese, which is why we were able to bring about a lasting peace in Europe and in Asia. We, the U.S., did that. We not only won the war, we won the peace, because we did not seek to impose harsh terms on the vanquished.
Speaking of the Germans and the Japanese, right now I am feeling the love for Japan, since their Prime Minister stood with us in our confrontation with North Korea. As for Germany, not so much. Chancellor Merkel, your country did not deserve the treatment you received from us. You should think about that before criticizing our President.

This is where it gets tricky when we conflate things. There is much to admire about Germany but of course there are a lot of problems as well. The same can be said about any nation or group or whatever even America. Trying to find the right balance in how to deal with anything in life is to some extent what we debate here on FR.
