If Trump is the Republican id, this exchange between Laura Ingraham and Krauthammer is a dialogue between the ego and superego. Ingraham, a nationalist, is all about the agenda. Was Trump’s presser today a good thing? Well, she says, he made some solid points — but it wasn’t useful. It didn’t advance the ball on policy. Krauthammer, a conservative, isn’t interested in that right now. Was it moral, he asks? Was it right?
I wonder how many variations of this exchange are playing out within the administration tonight. Watch this quickie clip of Chuck Todd speculating that John Kelly’s going to end up having to talk people out of quitting over today’s spectacle. Um, I doubt it. Since when do Republicans balk at anything Trump does?

Somehow the back and forth between Ingraham and Krauthammer ends with them debating whether Trump’s statement yesterday, in which he denounced white nationalists after hedging on Saturday, reflects what’s actually in his heart or not. If you don’t believe the reporting on that, just watch the guy talk. When Trump is reading from a script, it’s abundantly clear. He speaks more slowly and his sentences are conspicuously more measured than when he’s rat-a-tat riffing on his thoughts, as he obviously was today. What happened the past few days isn’t complicated. He softballed his comments about the alt-right on Saturday, was cajoled by his aides into saying something more emphatic about them yesterday, then resented the fact that he’d been pressured into clarifying his remarks and decided to double down on the “both sides” point today off the cuff. Yesterday’s statement almost amounted to an apology for Saturday’s comments, and you know how Trump feels about apologies. Today he un-apologized.
The same tactics used by the anti-Trump demonstrators shut down the scheduled rally. Demonstrators set fires and threw objects at buildings to protest the appearance of right-wing writer Milo Yiannopoulos at the University of California, Berkeley. They succeeded in shutting down his appearance.

I will bet a lot of money that Romney has no idea who or what antifa is. Its amazing how many repubs in govt never listen to talk radio, which is a great source of info and talking points against the left. Thats why they are clueless about these things. They also have little interest in street level politics. To them the RAT party is still represented by people like Hubert Humphrey, John Kennedy and Pat Moynihan, patriots with a slightly different set of priorities.
Whatever way the wind is blowing; that’s where you’ll find Krauthammer. Advice, don’t get nauseated by what’s going on at Fox....shut it off.

Good advice. I did so years ago. Media has no power unless we give it to them. I wish Trump would/could just ignore them and quit reacting to them. Waste of his energy.

I agree that there is “gentlemanly” school of conservatism where a harsh word about ones opponents is never uttered in polite society. Krauthammer is clearly one of them but I dont think being Jewish has anything to do with it. There are plenty of Jewish politicians who are nasty scrumbags such as Chuck Schumer. The gentleman conservative, who is always quick to point out Repub hypocrisy or questionable behavior always ends up helping the Democrats, because being “fair” is more important than winning.

In reality the truth has nothing to do with it. Trump has nothing but enemies in Washington. Trump threatens the status quo and they want him out, all of them. Trump needs to avoid controversy and get his agenda done. His enemies on both sides see this story as damaging to him and there is nothing to be gained by keeping it alive. It doesnt matter if he is right or wrong, drop it and move on. Its like the old saying “when you are in a hole, stop digging”.

Krauthammer doesn’t appear to remember the meaning of the word “moral”. Condemning political violence from all sides is the ONLY moral choice.
