‘Miami Vice’ Reboot In Works At NBC With Vin Diesel & Chris Morgan Producing

Miami Vice is eyeing a return to NBC. The network has put in development a reboot of its signature 1980s action crime drama, with the Fast & Furious duo of Vin Diesel and Chris Morgan producing.

The remake, which had been in the works since last season, will be written by Peter Macmanus (The Mist, Satisfaction) and produced by Universal Television, Chris Morgan Productions and Diesel’s One Race TV. No executive producers have been locked in yet, but Morgan and Ainsley Davies of Chris Morgan Productions are expected to serve as EPs along with Diesel and Shana Waterman of One Race and Macmanus. Both Morgan and Diesel have deals with Universal TV.

The original series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann, starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. It quickly became a pop culture phenom and ran on NBC for five seasons from 1984-89. The show, unlike standard police procedurals, drew heavily on 1980s New Wave culture and music, and became noted for its integration of music and visual effects.

USA began airing reruns in 1988, joined by an originally unaired episode, which ran on January 25, 1990.

A film adaptation of the series, directed by Michael Mann, was released by Universal in July 2006 with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as the leads.

This is one of two broadcast series remakes that are already in the works for next season, along with Charmed at the CW, from Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Urman Snyder.

Morgan is repped by ICM Partners and McKuin Frankel. Macmanus is with UTA.

Hollywood has run out of ideas. What are they going to reboot next? Friends? Seinfeld? Small Wonder?

H-Wood has accessed the Wikipaedia dictionary, where “creativity” and “originality” have gone the way of the dodo.

They're not worried about that. They're worried about making money, just like any other business.

Didn’t care for the series the first time it aired.

I might watch an episode or 2 to see how it goes. Not too excited about reboots.

Some of the reboots have been flops, but Lethal Weapon did pretty well last season.

Letterman once blurted out why he retired:

“Can’t compete with YOUTUBE vids...”

And ya know what?

They can’t.

Are you kidding. This show defined the 80s.

I saw some of that EW/DG on YT and loved it.

It looked liked something for TV and not the movies though.

I didn’t have television in the eighties.
The show was just a theme song played on the radio occasionally to me.

Looking at old photos, it's hard to believe that Don Johnson was ever considered a "fashion icon" ...

Philip Michael Thomas I can believe ...

Whatever happened to him?

I’ve been watching the old series on the NBC app. So much better than most of what airs on TV now.

Reminds me of Glenn Frey’s “Smuggler’s Blues” - his best solo song. He was also in an episode of Miami Vice.

My vote for best MV episode ever: ‘Calderone’s Return, part 1 The Hit list’. (1984, Season #1, Episode #4.)

The episode that I remember the most is ‘Out Where the Buses Don’t Run’. You just knew the cracked up, retired cop had killed Arcaro, but they could never catch him up on anything. Never forget his beverage of choice was clam juice.

A very odd episode with a very ‘down’ ending.

I started binge watching it last week. I was working nights when it was on the air and missed quite a bit of it. Loved it then and tried to catch it when I could. Sure brings back memories. Lol

The last time I saw Philip Michael Thomas was on these commercials for the International Psychic Network:

Just watched that Ep. 2 weeks ago. It was a good one. (I have Seasons #1-#3 on DVD.) Most of the remainder of Miami Vice’s run was just average TV inmho. I guess they just ran out of ideas but that is understandable.

This could work as long as they remembered what made the original series a hit. As one of its creators described it, “MTV Cops”.

Flash, stylish and colorful fashions, hot cars and speedboats, and great music, from Jan Hammer’s Series Theme and character themes to Phil Collins. It had to be cool and trendy. Everyone except bad guys was beautiful. Lots of bikinis and showgirl outfits.

It also has to work against CSI: Miami, which tried to expand on Miami Vice with a lot more depth and color to their drama. For 10 seasons.

This is not going to be an easy project.
