I decided it was time to replace my very old home stereo system from Magnavox. It had a CD player, an AM/FM radio and a pair of speakers. I must have bought it back in the late 90's. I knew it would be difficult to find an affordable CD player vs one that took DVDs or other. What I didn't know was how difficult it would be to find a home stereo system that allowed me to get AM radio. All the systems I saw online offered FM. That was no problem.
I went into Best Buy and was told I would have to connect to AM by using my iphone's Bluetooth App. The Bluetooth App would then be used to link up and connect with my home stereo, which would then provide access to AM radio.
Oh. said I. I didn't want the bother and all the extra fiddling needed to make that connection. So I looked online, and settled for something from LG for a little over $200. According to the online Ad, I could have both FM AND AM radio. I was thrilled, since I rely on AM to get most my talk shows. A few days pass, it's delivered, I set the home stereo system up , only to find, you guessed it. I still would be expected to use Bluetooth to establish the connection to Am. Damn!
After lots of silent grumbling, I decided, Okay, I guess I'll just have to learn how to connect. Eventually, I found the App, but the Bluetooth was only able to connect to a port with a headset symbol above it. Meaning, I suppose, Am Radio is only accessible via headphones. (Oy!!)
At this point, I just dug up one of my old CD players. A small model by Memorex, and I now use this to access AM Radio until further notice. I had to hunt for a replacement cord for it. Seems most stores don't even sell your basic appliance cords anymore. They are sold online for about $17. adding postage, brings that to about $26. No thanks. I found one stuffed in my box of old souvenir from college days. It still functions fine. Life is for learning, right?
I've gone through two "home theater" receivers over the past few years - found them both to be overly complex and the opposite of intuitive. So recently, I strapped on my back brace and took my Pioneer SX-1250 to the shop and had it refurbished. I added a bluetooth dongle to one of the inputs and can push Pandora or Spotify throughout the house via my structured wiring box. Gotta keep the volume level down around 3 or 4, though - today's speakers aren't made for this beast.
Sweet Sweet Rig you got there. My Yammie 2020 is equivalent . My 1020 and Kenwood 7600 are inferior, but lets talk speakers. Love my Polk 10A’s and my Polk 7B’s and My NHT towers. The Klipch towers are too pingy for my liking but better than any Bose crap.
Thrift store. Get what you need for $50 - $80 or so. Try before you buy. I have a thrift store receiver in my music Studio and works fine and I mix semi-pro tracks with it.
Bed,Bath, and Beyond has travel alarms that you wind.
Nonsense. It took me 15 seconds to find a variety of AM/FM radios under $20; for $28 I found one with a CD player.
We hooked up the Echo Dot to a little Bose speaker and, voila, it plays our favorite stations over the internet. I'm not a purist on the sound quality ... I just want to hear some talk radio shows.
We don't get too involved with the Echo, other than using as a radio, a timer, and a shopping list keeper.

That thing has so many large capacitors I am sure it has the depth to provide awesome base response. The Maggies dont have much base but are absolutely magnificent speakers. So light so airy so open. How do you handle the low end?
Many thanks. I will stop by there tomorrow!
My experience, as well. No electricity until 1946, after the war. No indoor plumbing. Carried water from the springhouse 50 yards from the house for cooking and washing. Light was from kerosene lamps. Beautiful Aladdin and Ray-O-Lite lamps. And Dietz barn lanterns. Butchered a hog and a beef on Thanksgiving and 3 more hogs in mid-January. Attended a one-room school; all 8 grades in 1 room.
I am having a similar problem trying to find a newer widescreen TV.
My current one is a VIZIO I bought in 2008. It has 2 component, 2 composite/AV, 2 HDMI connections. Newer ones have only 1 shared composite/AV. I did try some HDMI2composite and HDMI2AV cables, but they would not work.
Newer TVs have fewer different types of connections. Some of those old peripherals — DVD players, DVD recorders, WD TV box, etc., become obsolete because of the lack of connections.

As for AM radio, I have to stream it either through my android tablet or laptop/desktop. I can barely pick up any area stations on a regular radio.
No highs no lows... Must be Bose..
No more AM radio is going to make it hard for many to hear the likes of Rush and Dennis Prager - Aha - maybe that’s what it’s all about....
In the late 70s early 80s i worked for Rogers Sound Labs I had a pair of t Nevadas
A BEAST of BEAUTY! Love it*
I so wholeheartedly agree. Bose = (overpriced * under performing) raised to the power of tin ears.
I will be looking tomorrow. Got now a couple of leads here. Thanks!
Link please. Not familiar with T Nevada.
“I remember when people bought full systems, sat down, and just listened.”
It was routine all through high school to buy an album the day or week it came out and then go to a friend’s house and listen to the whole thing front and back.
Yep, it sure was. Great memories - of a better, vanished time.
