I've always wondered about the origins and meanings (if any) behind others Freeper handles. Its a quiet Sunday morning, so I thought it would be an interesting topic to start the day.
What's the story behind your handle?
Some thought it meant sub machine fan, but when I started here I was a huge fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar.
I never was never creative. It was taken from the longtime web page started in 1996
The name RightField fit me to a T. So happy the song was not about left field, because that would not have been an option. RightField covers all the bases, so to speak.

How did you know? Did it make the news?
Mine goes back to when Dole was saying: “Where is the outrage?” about PRC’s financial support of Bill Clinton.
It occurred to me that any hostile power that illegally gave $$ to a candidate, could blackmail him or her.
So if you were a hostile power, why wouldn’t you do that with ALL candidates?
I was an US Army paratrooper and jumpmaster. A “Towed Jumper” was a soldier, who, after jumping ended up being dragged along outside of the aircraft by their parachute’s (usually mis-routed), static line. The end result was to be repeatedly smacked up along the outside of aircraft, bounced and dragged through the slipstream behind the plane. Mercifully, I never was a ‘towed jumper’ myself.
In another sense, being a ‘towed jumper’ is a metaphor regarding life. Often, because of our own decisions and mistakes, we get dragged along and buffeted through life tethered by the consequences of those decisions and mistakes.
I wanted to be blue but when I signed up someone already had it. Then I thought, how Lucky I was to be an American.

Eaker was my good good buddy, and I miss him terribly. He took me under his wing when I was a newbie here, and was a source of quiet strength when my family and I were going through very hard times.
Lol nah, Maiden has been my favorite band since I was 17 or so, almost 15 years now.
My original screen name was my last name, my home building business name, so I asked Jim if he would change it a couple of years later, and he did. I figured the left would use it against my business; I understood how evil they were a long time ago.
Being from Michigan, and a huge fan of all things Lake Michiganish, I took the name from a spoof published locally twenty plus years ago. It was a letter of apology from an aquarium, apologizing for unwittingly letting loose a new shark hybrid into the lake that thrived in fresh water.
It was a mini scandal, sort of like when HG Wells novel War of the Worlds was broadcast. It took years to finally convince a lot of people it was a spoof.
Took the name after the humor of it all, plus, it does have teeth to it.......

I'll admit that the connection had occurred to me also. Given that you're a Freeper, I brushed it aside.
My age group, and what I do for a living, so as to do less explaining.
I was here for a while under a different handle, one that was based on my name and from which I could have been identified. Around the time I created this handle, in July 98, we were getting reports of freepers who were being harassed by what would now be known as the deep state. There were secret service visits, FBI agents showing up, tax audits, emailed threats, that sort of thing. People like Kathleen Willey had her cats killed for just telling the truth. Posters would pop up here with IP addresses in DC agencies, harass posters (disruptors, they were called), sometimes make vague threats, get the zot and be gone. The Viking Kitties were born to defend the place against official and non-official trolling.
We weren’t just aggregating news, we were good at finding bits of information from widespread sources in the days before Google, and putting the pieces together in ways that exposed the corruption of the Clinton regime to a large audience. We were definitely an enemy of the regime, and one of the top source of information that you would never be able to get from the existing news sources back then.
So we were a target. I could easily see things getting to the point that people here would be systematically identified and attacked. It never did happen, but there were incidents here and there.
I decided to create a handle that was anonymous. I was very angry about the idea that I would have to protect my identity from my government, but resigned to the need to do so. So I chose a handle that said that you may force me to give up my name, but you will not stop me from opposing what you are doing. And I have remailed defiant to the progressive left’s agenda, here and elsewhere.
