What's The Story Behind Your FR Handle?
Free Republic ^ | 23 July 2017 | Windy

I've always wondered about the origins and meanings (if any) behind others Freeper handles. Its a quiet Sunday morning, so I thought it would be an interesting topic to start the day.

What's the story behind your handle?

The Rufii was a newsletter put out in the early 1970s by students at the University of Southern California School of International Relations, which is located in the Rufus von KleinSmid Center. Von KleinSmid, the center's namesake, served as the university's president during the mid-twentieth century.

I used to visit this early humor site on the web called Brunching Shuttlecocks. I thought this send-up of Star Trek was especially funny. See the title of the first episode:

Star Trek: File This

(...and yes I know it's also from Hamlet's soliloquy)

Mine started out as “Real Cynic” during the Clinton administration at the time of the 2000 election fiasco when the MSM were pretty much all on the bandwagon claiming that Bush was trying to steal the election from rightful heir Gore. The moderator allowed me to change it to “Real Cynic No More”. Some time following the 2008 election, I requested the moderator allow me to change it once more to a different handle with neutral, non-political meaning, but they never responded, so I just left it as it is.

Lee Enfield was always my favorite bolt action, especially in the SMLE form. Back in the old days the ran about $100.00 and were available in a bunch of calibers, models and manufacturers so they were an easy way to get into collecting. Used to keep 10 of them on my boat.

When I was working as an editorial cartoonist, I couldn’t post my works on other sites under my byline, according to my employer at the time, so I came up with a non de plume that allowed me some anonymity.

You’ll make it - and Happy B’day when you do;)

Having checked FR’s memorial wall a while ago, I was astonished then at the young age many of our favorite FReepers passed.

Just went back & checked. Over 50% only in their 40’s & 50’s. A few 60s,70s and 80s. Probably veterans with severe injuries/conditions. Sad.

May they all RIP

Windflier, this is a wonderful thread idea. Thank you for starting it.

My screen name is the greeting which was used by St. Francis of Assisi.

St. Francis experienced a life-changing adult conversion from self-centeredness to God-centeredness. Francis was humble and he focused simply and powerfully on changing himself into a better person and on loving God.

Although Francis didn’t set out to change the world, only to change himself and to love and glorify God, the hearts thousands of people have been moved toward loving God through St. Francis of Assisi.

I’m far from being a St. Francis but his greeting wishes of peace and good for all is how I try to live, often failing - sometimes miserably! :-)

And now, a funny story about my screen name:

Shortly after discovering FreeRepublic I went to a gathering of the Houston FReepers. Two of the people who I met at that meeting were the mischievous Tom Eaker and the notorious humblegunner. Much later I learned that those two, without my knowledge and never in my presence, had the bright idea to morph my screen name and call me “pat my bottom”! LOL!!

I’m not sure that St. Francis would have approved! :-)

Also at the meeting was the late FReeper, Flyer. He’s one of the kindest, most gentle-hearted people I’ve ever known. Now that I think about it, he reminds me a lot of St. Francis of Assisi.

(Flyer, I hope you’re keeping an eye on Tom. Don’t let him get you into trouble. ;-)

Back in the 70's I put a CB radio in my li'l red Italian car, and decided I'd use "Dago Red" as my handle, to match the car, and the Chianti wine I enjoyed at the time. But it wasn't too long before one of the truckers on the CB informed me that "Dago Red" might eventually get me in trouble, some people offend easily.

Okay, I said, I like bright colors, I'll be "Dayglo Red". And so I was, until I got rid of my CB in the late 80's. And when in 2005 it came time to choose a FReeper handle, it had to be "dayglored".

A while back I looked up whether I could get the internet domain "dayglored.com". But it turns out there's bunch of guys that have band called "Day-Glo Red" in Phoenix http://www.dayglored.com/. No relation at all. So that domain is theirs.

When lefties hear what it means I am automatically removed from all conversation.

That's probably a good thing. Life is too short to waste time arguing with libs.
