What must Trump do to be greater than Reagan?

Posted on 05/06/2017 2:21:49 PM PDT by MNDude

The consensus with most conservatives is Ronald Reagan was the greatest conservative President ever. However, Reagan had a few strikes as a conservative, such as passing amnesty or appointing two moderates to the Supreme Court.

What do you believe President Trump must accomplish as President to be considered a greater President than Reagan?

Stupid question. Reagan won the Cold War and completely transformed the psyche of the American people. Maybe if Trump keeps his promises, he could be a good president. He cannot surpass Reagan, however.

Kind of agree.

It isn't really a fair comparison, because so much has changed in the 30 years since RR left office. During this time it's been technology that has transformed the psyche of the American people. President Trump maneuvers in a world vastly different than the one we inhabited in the 80's. President Reagan had the skills needed when he was called upon to lead. He was our quintessential cold warrior, and led the successful effort that defeated Soviet communism. Domestically he lowered tax rates which resulted in long-lasting economic prosperity for our country. He wasn't perfect, but his presidency was overwhelmingly positive for America. He inspired so many Americans to be self-reliant, and he rightly demonized Big Government. He held close the values and ideals of American exceptionalism. We'll never see a man quite like him again.

I believe Donald Trump is on a path to greatness. He, like Reagan, is an intelligent, complex man. He brings a lot of other dimensions to his governing than RR did, which again is a result of the times we live in. For all of the pundit class who think they have him nailed down, they profoundly underestimate him. Trump understands nuance which, combined with his sense of purpose and his innate strength and intuition, means people regularly miss, or misunderstand, his intentions.

Trump knows how to deal with people, which Reagan also did and was frequently given credit for (and I'm not referring to smiles and handshakes). If there's any skill that is absolutely required to be an effective, successful, world-changing leader, it is that one.

Nothing in the Constitution says that federal departments must reside in a single metropolitan area.

So what Trump can do is almost all federal departments to others states. And it’s best if the city of each department is rotated every 8 years so that bureaucratic abuse and swamp dogs don’t build a nest.

Make sure that plenty of jobs are moved to Montana, North Dakota, and Alaska. Alligators don’t like cold weather.

No offices should be moved too Hawaii however except the Bureau of Birth Records.

Build the wall and end birthright citizenship.

If Trump did this, got a few conservative (fair) leaning justices in the Supreme Court, and got the economy revved up again he will have a successful first term. I'd like to see a balanced budget and to get this healthcare thing resolved and out of the news as well.

That kid and his mother were intercepted at the border.
The ones already here are staying, and so is the illegal and unconstitutional DACA program.

Find a way to get the RINOs/GOPe to pass the necessary Bills for his promised agenda. Reagan will always have a place in my heart but the current times would allow Trump to almost eclipse him - I’m betting it happens.

Call out the leftist racists and sexists (antifas) for being hateful, intolerant pigs. They hate and harass men, families, whites and Christians. Also, name them what they are - communists.

It’d be considered blasphemy, but that act of amnesty was probably the most devastating blow to our country in the long term.

We all love and revere Reagan, but the truth is the truth.

Signing the 1986 amnesty bill was an act, that in retrospect, borders on treason. It opened the floodgates for the third world to invade our country, forever altering the character of our nation. It also saved the Democrat party from certain death, by replenishing their falling voter rolls.

Had Reagan stood firm and simply enforced our immigration laws, we may never have suffered the subsequent rise of the radical left, and all the attendant destruction that has done to America.

Reagan certainly did not have the kind of forces arrayed against him as does Trump

Reagan (God love him) was directly responsible for the forces of radical leftism that Trump now faces.

He naively trusted the Democrats to hold up their end of the bargain in 1986 when he signed the amnesty bill. They stabbed him in the back, and got millions of new voters in return, thus saving their party from certain death.

The enfant terrible that is the current radical left, would have perished, had Reagan not saved them.

In later years, Reagan said it was his biggest mistake.

That’s a lie that he fought for amnesty

True - Reagan didn't "fight for amnesty", but he did cave to the invasion lobby and signed the 1986 amnesty bill. That act breathed new life into the Democrat party, and saved them from certain death.

Had he not done that, we wouldn't have 40 million invaders in our country today, the vast majority of whom vote for, or otherwise support the treasonous left.

Yes. AGW is a religion.

It’s also a tax.

A huge tax on production and productive people.

It is a religion that worships taxation and bureaucratic entanglements and makes production out to be the incarnation of evil.

It’s not his fault that they didn’t seal the border afterwards like the bill said. But Trump hasn’t sealed the border or done anything about sanctuary cities yet or birthright citizenship. Most of the Dreamers will be given amnesty.

Signing the 1986 amnesty bill was an act, that in retrospect, borders on treason.

I think you may not have a full take on this issue. Treason is far from what happened.

Reagan had a lot on his plate. He had an agenda that was at times overwhelming, and he had to trade things off of his priority list.

He never had a Republican House, there were 269 rats in 1982, and 253 in 1984. The Republican senate was pretty RINOish as well.

He had rejuvenated the American economy, but was in the midst of killing the biggest evil in the world at that time, the Soviet Union.

He traded for the funding of the military, and the killing of Soviet communism for something that looked small. Yep, he thought the dems would help stop the invasion, back then they were plausibly in the fight to control the borders.

In 20/20 hindsight, we know that the democrats were just as evil as the Soviets, but at its worst, he trusted the dems would help control the borders. He got it wrong, but only because the dems had left the love of America for the vision of Howard Zinn. That was not yet clear to anyone. It was not treasonous on the part of Reagan, it was on the part of the dems.

Quite frankly, it was the Bush family who capitulated, not him. He thought he had a deal, the Bush family looked the other way. Heck, they even encouraged it. HW Bush was the one who gave away the store, not Reagan.

I think you’re sugarcoating it and apologizing for Reagan. I love the man too, but he screwed up royally with the 1986 amnesty.

Yes, it was his screw up, and his alone. Given what he knew about the left, he was a fool to cut a deal with them.

It won't happen because Trump will never have as many votes in Congress as Reagan did or as well-run a White House as Reagan had.

There's much that President Trump can do and should do, but setting the bar of achievement too high means setting yourself up for disappointment.

I'm sorry, but the buck stops at the president's desk.

Reagan knew full well what loathesome, despicable creatures the Democrats were, even in his day. Experience alone, should have guided his hand in those negotiations.

I wasn't even a Republican at the time, and even I knew he had made a terrible mistake by signing the amnesty.

I agree he made a mistake, but we are comparing Trump vs Reagan. So far Trump hasn’t done what he campaigned on.

Only in 20/20 hindsight.

He was trying to win the cold war against the evil of his time. Which was a monstrously hard and wonderful thing he did. It released us from the terrible burden our generation had during its prime. No one else could have done it. No one predicted what happened from that amnesty.

No sugarcoating, it was a mistake, but the Bush family and the left made it all happen, not him.

Only in 20/20 hindsight.

Not really. I was a disillusioned Democrat at the time, and even I knew it was a mistake to give amnesty to the illegals.
