Ex-officer Michael Slager pleads guilty in shooting death of Walter Scott
In a deal with federal prosecutors, former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager pleaded guilty Tuesday to one charge of deprivation of rights under color of law in the shooting death of Walter Scott. In exchange for his plea in US District Court in South Carolina, Slager will not face state murder charges.
[Original story, published at 2:23 p.m. ET] Michael Slager, the former South Carolina police officer who fatally shot a man in the back, will plead guilty to a federal charge of using excessive force, his attorney said Tuesday. The crime is a felony, punishable by up to life in prison.

I remember back around 1986 hanging out on the roof of the local elementary school when the cops showed up.
We ran for it to the woods, a friend in front of me tackled a cop while on the run and i jumped over him, as i ran i heard behind me “STOP or god help me i will shoot you”.
Thank god it was not this cop....
I disagree. The perp assaulted the cop, took his weapon and used it on him, then tried to flee and was shot.
Sure looks like murder to me. And -— after denying any wrongful action, over and over again, under oath-— ex-Officer Slager now admits he knowingly committed a crime? Then he admits he’s a menace to society and shouldn’t be breathing the free air for a good long time.
What bothers me most is everything about this. First the cop shot him in the back several times. Second, he tried to place a gun there. Which means he had a gun to place there. Which means hes done this before. Or at least he was prepared to do this.
This cop is a stoned cold killer. Say what you want about any other cop. But this guy makes every cop look bad. This guy is why we have a problem. I will not mind if he goes to jail and gets beaten up every day.
Cops do a hard, dirty, thankless job. And they don’t get the pay they deserve. But this guy should never be a cop. He should never be walking the streets.
> Second, he tried to place a gun there.
BULL.
Lots of police officers carry backup pieces. I do at times.
You shoot when you’re in immediate danger. The man was fleeing and shot in the back. It’s pretty clear.
yup
There is no evidence that Scott grabbed Officer Slager’s Taser. The video shows Slager walking over and dropping his Taser next to Scott’s body in an effort to make it look like that happened.
From breaking off hand to hand combat to the final shot was about three seconds. The perp had already taken the cops taser and fired it at the cop.
We know everything. The camera records the whole stop from the moment he flags the car for a broken tail light. There is nothing about this that is in question. There were two cameras and another cop there. And of course he incriminates himself by throwing down another gun. The case is over. He pleaded to stop himself from going to a local jail and to stop himself from being hanged. Unfortunately he is going to a federal prison.
The man was quite some distance from the cop in the video as the cop was firing. It’s clear in the video. I don’t know why you’re so eager to defend a clear abuse of government authority.
I don’t think that was “planting a gun”, as was implied. Should he have left a weapon unattended?
I’ve seen the video and stepped through it frame by frame numerous times. It was about three seconds.
He did not throw down another gun. It was a taser.
How was the man an immediate threat with his back turned to him. Also, the taser was on the ground when he was running. So I’m not sure where you’re getting your info.
The bystander’s video is on youtube.
No there are three video cameras. And in court they are longer. What you saw was edited for the news. As each cop arrives there is another camera. The first cop who pulls over the guy has a camera in his car. The second cop has a camera and records the shooting. He is black. A third cop records the first cop throwing down the gun. All the cameras are running for a while. Plus the second cop, a large black guy, sees the first cop throw down the gun and asks him to pick it up again.
You have several views, you have several witnesses who are cops. This is open and shut.
