* The Senate confirmed a treaty with Britain relating to Central America. “The Executive declined to lay before the Senate the treaty negotiated with Mexico by Mr. Forsyth; and the draft of a new treaty has been prepared. It proposes the purchase from Mexico of the territory comprised in the States of Sonora, Sinaloa, and Lower California, including the Gulf of California. The sum proposed to be paid for these new acquisitions is stated at some twelve or fifteen millions of dollars.” Commercial treaties have also been negotiated with Persia, Venezuela, Chili and Siam.

It didn’t seem to come out in the story that the Brits are fighting to make China safe and secure for their opium trade.

Ah, the Second Opium War, seems Brits have asked Americans to get involved, which we declined, we're neutral.
But we do seem to pop up now and then at moments convenient to the Brits.
One of our ships is in the area now, could play some role at Taku Forts near Bejing in the future.

Per my recent reading Powhatan will be the most powerful ship in the U.S. Navy in 1860. Her CO will receive conflicting orders and the mix-up will have her deploying to Florida when her presence was really required in Charleston Harbor to assist in a resupply operation for the Ft. Sumter garrison.
He’s a little Churchillian around the droopy eyes.
Also interesting that opium contributed to the wealth of the family who my crystal ball tells me might reach high office in the distant future.
I do see where Delanos were originally from Massachusetts, which could make them Puritans and not Dutch.
And I note where their famous descendants with Dutch names were Episcopalian.
So, just guessing here, maybe religion was not a strong factor in their lives?
Another interesting to note is where *some* Americans turned toward and became friendly with Japan, others like Warren Delano and his descendants became much more attached to China.
Of course from our current perspective in 1857, both are very remote, but we have to wonder if it will make a big difference in, oh, say, approximately 80 years?

You know, as I look around, I may have the picture of Warren Delano Sr. not his son Warren Jr. who made is fortunate in the China opium trade.
If so, the family resemblance is all the more remarkable to that future grandson who will carry the Delano name.
The one who convinced us by his personal example that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
But speaking of fear, here in 1857 I feel an economic panic coming just around the corner, one deep enough to send our Warren Delano back to China to recoup his lost fortune.
Seems like Powhattan was the Forest Gump of it’s time.
