Interesting that a Puritan family would have no scruples about selling opium to the Chinese.

Also interesting that opium contributed to the wealth of the family who my crystal ball tells me might reach high office in the distant future.

I do see where Delanos were originally from Massachusetts, which could make them Puritans and not Dutch.
And I note where their famous descendants with Dutch names were Episcopalian.
So, just guessing here, maybe religion was not a strong factor in their lives?

Another interesting to note is where *some* Americans turned toward and became friendly with Japan, others like Warren Delano and his descendants became much more attached to China.

Of course from our current perspective in 1857, both are very remote, but we have to wonder if it will make a big difference in, oh, say, approximately 80 years?

It's a little like another Upnorth "aristocratic" family who got their start in the illegal alcohol trade.

Oh, are we going to have an Economic Panic? I wonder if I should pack up the Extremely Numerous Offspring and move West.
