OK.
Sorry for the vanity.
I am just checking however, recently UA by way of the police, pulled (physically) a paying passenger out of a flight recently. He was actually dragged off the plane.
The plane was over-booked. The airline did some sort of lottery, and the guy lost.
Now I get that things happen, and I get that the flight was overbooked (not a good thing, from my view) but I think I just heard a report that this was partly due to a UA employee reservation, being kept.
On a nationwide, live news program.
So the guy was pulled out of the plane, so a free/discount employee could fly?
Is that true?
Absolutely. And when told to get in the camps, you do it too.
I agree, they should have sweetened the reward until folks bit. They may be wishing they’d paid someone $10K (or more!) to walk simply walk off the plane before it’s over.
>>It is incompetence at an epic level multiplied by stupidity and topped off with a sprinkle of jack boots.
Worth saying again.
Some people on another forum I’m on, including some lawyers, did some analysis of the United Ts & Cs for passenger behavior. On the face of it, they had no ability to remove him involuntarily once they had allowed him to boarded and be seated, based on their own rules.
As you said, this ought to end up being very expensive, both in settlement costs and PR. It already is, in PR. And unfortunately we’ll never know how expensive the settlement costs are, as they will be under NDA.
He won’t need to get that far, a few news conferences & United will make a settlement.
BUT....if you are asked to remove....you do it. It's their airplane and I'll bet there's a removal clause in your "buy ticket" contract.
Four employees who had to be flown to the plane they were going to be manning.
You have a dog in this fight or a bee in your bonnet. You are defending the indefensible.
This was a lousy series of business decisions and an indictment of United’s corporate culture.
You have no experience of jury trials if you think the fine print is going to excuse calling the airport cop thugs and letting this escalate rather than spending $1000 on a limo for a foreseeable scheduling issue.
There should be contingency plans and a passenger should not be exposed to brutality for not immediately bowing and exiting instead of protesting mildly when he is being ejected for their mistakes.
This not surprising as United’s customer service is non existent. Vouchers generally are not worth the paper they are wrote on as United know the majority will never be redeemed. Myself and a co-worker was stuck in Trinidad because of United’s mechanical failure. Fair enough but they gave us hotel vouchers to a hotel without any rooms available, the food voucher were for $10 US per day and they claimed they could not get us a flight for 3 days which was a lie. We managed to get out on our own. Now they think they are doing me a favor by offering a $200 voucher.
2 went peacefully, then they got to this man who said that he had patients in the morning. They said not our problem and called the thugs.
They are blued screwed and tattooed.

I understand screwed and tattooed but what does blued mean?

You’re assuminghe’s a practicing doc.

Lol,
So take Mom off the plane because she paid the least and leave her 2, 4 and 6 year old children on board. Would that happen? No. Oh and I forgot about the psychological comfort dog. So Mom stays but the Doc who perhaps has a line of surgeries to perform, some perhaps on little children, does get bumped. The logic of how they chose who is to be voted off the plane eludes me.
No bee in the bonnet, but I know DOT regulations and United’s contract of carriage.
There is NO legal basis for an award against United whatsoever. There is NO chance United will settle for even a penny. Maybe they will give something for public relations reasons, but that is not a settlement.
I challenge you to describe the legal basis for a case against United.
EVERY airline will call the police if a passenger is asked to leave the plane and they refuse to do so. If there is a problem at that point, it is between the passenger and police. Maybe there is case for complaint against the police, but United here has no fault whatsoever.
EVERY airline involuntarily bumps passengers. Federal regulations specifically allow it is and regulate the regulation granted for it. There is also a contract for your plane ticket that echoes this.
There really isn’t a “lighter side” to this situation, but some of these are pretty funny:

Their contingency plans are inadequate. That seems very clear. Again, if you expect to stay in business, your conduct must reflect a sincere attitude of placing the customer first. While “policy” may have been followed, it was poorly executed. This wound was self inflicted by incompetence. The results do matter. What United now has is images of a bloodied passenger, physically assaulted by numerous uniformed and armed police. The optics are devastating. You can cite all of the rules and regs until the breath leaves your body, but the vision is permanent.
