Commentary: A new J.D. Power study finds Surface buyers are happier than their iPad counterparts. They're younger and prefer Microsoft's design.
Have you noticed a certain giddiness in some of your friends lately?
I'm thinking about the ones who use a Microsoft Surface.
I only ask because J.D Power has just emitted its US Tablet Satisfaction Study and it declared that Surface owners experience deeper sensations of satisfaction than iPad buyers.
Apple fanpersons might turn pale when they learn the main reasons for this greater Surface joy are, according to the Power people, "its top rankings in the features and styling & design factors."

I just noticed that Amazon is selling refurbished MS Surface 3s, minus pen and keyboard for around $285. For those Freepers who are looking for a good bargain on these, that's where I would look. The simple keyboard for them is around $80. . . the pen should be discounted too.
If you want to run Windows 10 on a tablet environment, it's not a bad device.
They’re both really pricey hardware and I won’t be maxing either one out any time soon :).
I have a cheap Android tablet, it browses the web and watches movies. I don’t need anything else when it’s nothing more than a substitute for a stack of magazines on the back of the toilet.
I think that JD Powers is funded by the companies they review. . . the more you put in, the better you get rated. When Samsung became a member, their ratings went up drastically. Powers can't ignore obvious winners, but I think they do put their thumb on the scales.
Ironic that I was reading this headline on FR as I was finishing up re-installing Windows 10 on a box I use for cryptocurrency and gaming. It died due to a “BSOD” Win 10 OS crash with a “no boot” condition. It happened after a failed Win 10 update...beware the Win 10 update #KB4015438.
Why? I find it very easy to use on an iPad. If you don't like Safari, use an alternative browser. There are a lot available.
Thanks to Swordmaker for the ping!!
Other browsers are available for the iPad. Opera, Dolphin, Firefox, plus many more.
Uh, no, you still have the virtual keyboard in two orientations that changes with the needs of the apps you are using. It works fine without a surface. The iPad and it's Operating System were designed from the beginning to work without a physical keyboard. Windows was not. The virtual keyboards on the Surface are pasted on, and the apps are kludged to work with a screen keyboard.
Low end Surface 4 package is within spitting distance. The iPad Pro at that price has Cellular connectivity, which is not even available for the Surface. . . otherwise the 9.7 inch iPad Pro starts at $599.
699 for 128gb. Add pen and keyboard and you are over 900.
999 for the surface 4 package gets you a larger screen and twice the performace!
You really should do your homework on your hast post!
I am having a hard time visualizing your using a keyboard with the ipad without placing it on a surface ...
Yeah, but let's be realistic. Go to Microsoft's site for pricing. The Surface starts from about $799, and goes up from there. That's multiple times the cost of the iPad, at the low end for new models can be had for $329 at the Apple site. A huge difference in price. Refurbished models even less, and new boxed items of the previous version still being sold by Apple for $200. The Surface Book starts at $1499. The Surface Studio starts at $2999. These are starting prices! A buyer would be paying much more for a configuration that is worthwhile!
The iPad, in various configurations is cheaper, much much cheaper in cost than the Surface, which is definitely a luxury tech piece. That we do agree on.
I saw the NE Patriots coach toss a Surface during a game this past season. He did not look very happy with it.
“Yeah, but let’s be realistic. Go to Microsoft’s site for pricing.”
Yeah, but let’s be realistic and look at the what the street prices are.
iPad pro for $699 for 128gb. Add pen and keyboard and you are over $900.
$999 for the surface 4 package including keyboard and a better pen gets you a larger screen and twice the performance!

On Amazon the surface pro 4 starts at 688. Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is 428. With a surface you’re getting a bigger screen with higher resolution and fully functional windows OS. I really like mine.
You want to be realistic? You’re not. The Apple Pencil is not just a pen. If you get a regular pen stylus, the price is lower than what you are comparing for the Surface. The Pencil is far more functional, and the Surface does not have it. The Apple iPad still does more at equivalent price factoring than the Surface, which costs much more for the same functionality.
You're talking two-year old models for Surface? Without comparing to older iPad models? Let's have fair comparisons. You can get older iPad models real cheap, and compare pricing. Talk latest versions of both, and compare.
“The Surface Book starts at $1499.”
Actually it is $1299. And it competes with the MacBook Pro 13 Laptop at $1499.
And does the MacBook Pro display detach from the keyboard?
