Commentary: A new J.D. Power study finds Surface buyers are happier than their iPad counterparts. They're younger and prefer Microsoft's design.
Have you noticed a certain giddiness in some of your friends lately?
I'm thinking about the ones who use a Microsoft Surface.
I only ask because J.D Power has just emitted its US Tablet Satisfaction Study and it declared that Surface owners experience deeper sensations of satisfaction than iPad buyers.
Apple fanpersons might turn pale when they learn the main reasons for this greater Surface joy are, according to the Power people, "its top rankings in the features and styling & design factors."

I find it interesting that JD Powers used price to knock down the iPad and give a win to the Samsung tablets several years ago when the iPad had five stars in every category except price, beating handily the Samsung's ratings in those categories where those tablets got at most three stars, but granting the much cheaper Samsung five stars. Now, price is given a much lower weighting. Hmmmmmm.
You can call Surface what you want; tablet, notebook, thin/convertable laptop etc. It’s a more desirable machine than an iPad.
The iPad is stuck in the middle now; if you just want to browse/watch movies a $150 android tablet can do it as well. If you need a laptop replacement it can’t do it as well as a Surface.
It’s not an overpriced tweener piece of hardware at the moment. If it ran OS X instead of iOS it might be a different story.
The problem is...without the source for Win 10 you forfeit any and all trust in WTF is on the wire.
At least with Apple, you stand a chance with such standard admin tools like strace -p PID and others to see just WTF it’s doing...unless they have poked around honesty.
Either way, the users look to me like they DONTGAF.
I’m not quite sure why - I have both an MBP and a MS-based laptop with touch-screen. Prefer the MBP in terms of usability and portability.
well said
Pinging dayglored and ThunderSleeps for relevance to their ping lists.

I have to add - in my comment, I was comparing my Macbook Pro to my laptop. My iPad isn’t as useful as a computer as the laptop or a surface computer might be, but it is still a nice machine.
I think that this is more a comparison based on where each manufacturer defines the line between the pad-type computer and the keyboard-based computer. MS saw a gap in the Apple line and filled it.
The Surface is a hybrid computer pretending to be a laptop and a notebook, but not doing either very well. It is overpriced. An iPad at a fraction of the cost can handle functions like browsing/watching movies, same as android tablets. My wife recently bought an iPad Mini for $200 that works great. Can you get a Surface at that cost? No. If you want a laptop, get a Mac Pro. There are various versions of the iPad from low to high cost, depending on how robust you want it to be. The Surface is simply high cost.
That depends on which version of the Surface you have. I have had the Surface 1 and 2, both definitely tablets but also full up computers. They were great. Now have the Surface book which will convert to tablet and tablet mode; even better. The keyboard on the Surface book is a full KB but can flip to give you the tablet mode which requires no “surface”, it’s a tablet.
My Ipad is mostly userd for web surfing. I hate Safari so much I won’t be buying another Ipad.
They must have bought of JD.
NEVER will get a MS tablet !
The Surface Pro 3 is a fantastic tablet, but it’s an Apple and Oranges comparison...
Oh no, the fags will revolt!
If you use a keyboard with the ipad you have the same problem ... duh
You don’t have to use the keyboard ... duh
I’m not saying the Surface, by any stretch of the imagination, is not overpriced. It is purely a luxury tech piece IMHO.
However an iPad pro can run $1,000-1,129 so it’s not like it’s a bargain either on the high end.
I’m not trying to argue here and not a fanboy but a top end Surface and iPad are both $1,000+ and I’d much rather have one than the other.
Hmm. Surface 4 package at Costco is 999. I pads are within spitting distance of that.
The current Microsoft Surface 4 12.3" 2736 x 1824 resolution 128GB (no pen, no keyboard), 9 hours battery use, starts at $799 to $2838 w/512GB.
The current Apple iPad Pro 12.9" 2732-by-2048 Resolution, $899 to $1129 w/256GB and cellular and GPS.
To make the low end REALLY MS Surface useable, you need to add the Keyboard Cover at $129.
You can buy a brand new, full speed, modern iPad for $329. . . or a iPad mini for $249. That's not over-priced.
The Surface Book, maxed with a 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM is $3199.
Max out the MacBook Pro with a 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM and it's only $2899, $300 less expensive, and the Mac comes with an entire suite of software the Microsoft doesn't.
The Microsoft Surface line is far more expensive than the Apple line.
There, I can agree with you. The MS Surface fills a niche that was going wanting. However, looking at sales figures, it is not a big niche.
