Mother of Three Dies Shortly After Finishing Half Marathon

A Pennsylvania mother of three died shortly after crossing the finish line of the Scranton Half Marathon on Sunday.

Lindsay Doherty, 36, collapsed just after completing the 13.1-mile race, according to a statement from Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland.

"Despite immediate medical intervention by our onsite doctors and EMS crew, she died in the Geisinger Community Medical Center emergency room after resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful," said the Scranton Half Marathon Committee in a statement.

...

Over 2,000 runners took part in the fourth annual race in Scranton alongside her.

An autopsy, which is scheduled for Monday, will hopefully shine some light as to what happened to Doherty — who ran the same race last year.

Doherty was "quite the runner" and had been training for at least six months for this race, said her pastor Monsignor Neil J. Van Loon of the St. Paul's Parish in Scranton.

Reminds me of an old joke.

Runners live 5 years longer than everybody else, but they spend the 5 years running.

Come on, it isn't that bad... you know the PC drill:

"She died doing what she loved." (Sarcasm off)

Running and crapping out stories seem to be far more than anecdotal. Go for the weights, though don’t go overboard.

It's the Jimmy Fixx paradox. Guy was a legendary runner in the 70s and even wrote a book about it. All he did was run.

Then keeled over from a massive heart attack.

There are explanations but sometimes we don’t know where to begin because things appear to look good, but in reality, are not.

“A lot more of my contemporaries have died from exercise than have died from sitting in chair. The ratio is in excess of 20-1.”

Seriously? Sitting in chair all day leads to long term problems. Exercise causes short term problems like increased heartbeat or flow of blood that can be deadly if there is aneurysm or end-stage heart issues or blood clots.

It is wise to take chances with exercise and healthy living rather than sitting in chair. But your 20-1 ratio is very intriguing. Please elaborate.

A half-marathon isn’t a crazy, insane distance. It takes most people over 2, but way less than 3 hours. If the weather is not-too-hot, and people have trained appropriately for the event, training for one is a great way to motivate yourself to keep on training. Ultra-marathon distances are another matter. People die training for those.

Folks I knew personally, or who knew someone I knew:

The guy that fell off his exercise bike dead in front of his young children.
The guy that fell over dead while jogging in Memorial Park, Houston.
The guy that fell off his bike dead in Europe.
The guy who fell off his bike dead in New Zealand.
The guy that fell off his bike dead in Dallas.
The guy who fell over dead jogging in Dallas.
The guy that got hit by a car while biking in the Rockies.

Famous exerciser:
Jim Fixx. Dead at 52 from running.

Others - maybe too young to be a contemporary
29 year old at the 2008 Dallas marathon
32 year old at the Dallas 2010 half-marathon.
22 year old at the Dallas 2016 half marathon (resuscitated with an AED after 3 minutes of no heartbeat)

Up to a dozen, so I’ll throw in the guy that fell over dead while playing cards with his elderly father. He was grossly overweight, and was a heart attack waiting to happen.

Throw in the bicyclists killed by drivers around here, and you’ll get up to 20 or 40 or 60 in a hurry.

With improved CCUs and better trained paramedics, cancer gets a lot more folks that I know than does sedentary heart attacks. Car wrecks may be second.

Sad. Why are so.many middle aged people running marathons these days? I don’t get it. It doesn’t seem particularly good for the body.

I’ve heard High-Intensity Training is the way to go. Five minutes of alternating between all-out sprints and resting, will beat two hours of cardio.

I can see the doctor’s point, however, some doctors have the notion that during a marathon or a bicycle road race, the athlete is running continuously at maximum heart rate, which is not the case. Maintaining max HR for that amount of time is not possible. A pro racer is not running anywhere near max during a 3 to 6 hour training ride, maybe he’s cruising along at 120-130 bpm, maybe lower. Different metabolic processes are involved in each exercise “zone”. Exercise physiology is a topic still not adequately covered in medical schools. Thirty years ago, 1 hour total was all that was spent on the topic. Now it is 2 3 hour lectures. Not credit hours, clock hours. It is still not sufficient.

With that list, you’re just being silly. Since you are going with the list, how about all those MILLIONS that die every year sitting... while flying (hundreds die each year) and while driving (tens of thousands die each year just in the US).

Jim Fixx had genetics working against him. Read further, you will find that he outlived his brothers by quite a bit. Running got him some extra years. There was family history of heart problems involved.

Jack LaLanne had a brother that outlived him and Jack lived to 96.

Jim Fixx would have lasted longer had he gotten checked out, but yes, he outlived family including 10 years longer than his father.

An autopsy Monday showed Doherty suffered an intra-abdominal hemorrhage, Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland said.
