Mother of Three Dies Shortly After Finishing Half Marathon

A Pennsylvania mother of three died shortly after crossing the finish line of the Scranton Half Marathon on Sunday.

Lindsay Doherty, 36, collapsed just after completing the 13.1-mile race, according to a statement from Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland.

"Despite immediate medical intervention by our onsite doctors and EMS crew, she died in the Geisinger Community Medical Center emergency room after resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful," said the Scranton Half Marathon Committee in a statement.

...

Over 2,000 runners took part in the fourth annual race in Scranton alongside her.

An autopsy, which is scheduled for Monday, will hopefully shine some light as to what happened to Doherty — who ran the same race last year.

Doherty was "quite the runner" and had been training for at least six months for this race, said her pastor Monsignor Neil J. Van Loon of the St. Paul's Parish in Scranton.

Very unfortunate. A dear friend of mine, about ten years older, thin as a rail, without so much as an ounce of body fat...died instantly of a heart attack. Sometimes there is no real explanation for these things. Sad news for that family, indeed. :-(

Cardiac...or electrolytes. We had a radiology resident at the hospital where I worked who dropped dead after some jogging. There are people, young people, who can appear healthy but have a cardiac deformity brewing.

A lot more of my contemporaries have died from exercise than have died from sitting in chair. The ratio is in excess of 20-1.

Other than that, what was her time?

...sorry, the competitive recreational runner in me.

Had a friend who was a runner, ran all his life, very healthy, kicked off on a short weekend run. Go figure.

So sad.

“Geisinger Community Medical Center”

Well there’s your problem right there. ;-)

Stuff happens. Doubt very much it had anything to do with excersize. More people die sitting on the can than die while excercising. Sad news and way too young.

Wow— awful poor girls losing their mom. Hate to speculate but wonder if she had a leaky mitral valve?

Tragic case. Yes, dehydration can be deadly.

My doc prescribed electrolytes for me. I only walk fast on treadmill, pedal stationery bike fast as I can. She even told me best electrolytes to buy: Ultima. Comes in flavors, available at AMZ and possibly your local store.

Now I have big bottle of electrolyte water to keep sipping during all workouts. Makes a big difference.

Prayers for this unfortunate woman’s lovely children and the rest of her family.

I have no source for this other than my husband mentioning an article he read. It states that high cardio in men (doesn’t apply to the woman in this story) suppresses the production of testosterone in middle age and older men. This can lead to heart/cardiovascular issues that cause the guy who is in incredible shape to drop from a sudden heart attack while running.

Just happened, yet again, to someone he knows. The guy was 49 years old and ran or biked daily. My husband called a friend who also knew the guy and said,” Stop running.”

Weightlifting is beneficial to men, but not long distance running. No studies on middle age women and long distance running AFAIK. I’m thinking I need to get back to weightlifting.

I have a good friend who used to be into the Iron Man and Marathon stuff. He is in great shape and is 60 plus years old. His Dr told him to stop and keep his exercise limited to walking and light cardio. The Dr told him these extreme events put a lot of stress on the body and heart even for someone in shape. The Dr said these exercise/training events do not have long lasting benefits and and are unnecessary. He likened it to a Race car engine that runs hard during a race and unexpectedly fails. Now if I could just get the motivation to walk and do light cardio....
