“A lot more of my contemporaries have died from exercise than have died from sitting in chair. The ratio is in excess of 20-1.”

Seriously? Sitting in chair all day leads to long term problems. Exercise causes short term problems like increased heartbeat or flow of blood that can be deadly if there is aneurysm or end-stage heart issues or blood clots.

It is wise to take chances with exercise and healthy living rather than sitting in chair. But your 20-1 ratio is very intriguing. Please elaborate.

Folks I knew personally, or who knew someone I knew:

The guy that fell off his exercise bike dead in front of his young children.
The guy that fell over dead while jogging in Memorial Park, Houston.
The guy that fell off his bike dead in Europe.
The guy who fell off his bike dead in New Zealand.
The guy that fell off his bike dead in Dallas.
The guy who fell over dead jogging in Dallas.
The guy that got hit by a car while biking in the Rockies.

Famous exerciser:
Jim Fixx. Dead at 52 from running.

Others - maybe too young to be a contemporary
29 year old at the 2008 Dallas marathon
32 year old at the Dallas 2010 half-marathon.
22 year old at the Dallas 2016 half marathon (resuscitated with an AED after 3 minutes of no heartbeat)

Up to a dozen, so I’ll throw in the guy that fell over dead while playing cards with his elderly father. He was grossly overweight, and was a heart attack waiting to happen.

Throw in the bicyclists killed by drivers around here, and you’ll get up to 20 or 40 or 60 in a hurry.

With improved CCUs and better trained paramedics, cancer gets a lot more folks that I know than does sedentary heart attacks. Car wrecks may be second.
