Since I don't watch TV and do not have cable, I subscribe to Netflix (viewed via my wi-fi from the internet). I did this in a vain attempt to be able to watch movies at home. I love the way Netflix bills itself as the "largest home entertainment network". Hey, Netflix, I've got the bread and the mustard, and you sure have the baloney!
The few made-in-Hollywood-by-professional-filmmakers movies they offer---the kind you watch in theaters---are at least 10 years old and most older. The only currently made movies are their own dreadful attempts. The same with Amazon movies. Otherwise, they offer old TV episodes, documentaries, and faigelah fare (gay garbage).
Is there a way to watch current movies (and maybe the occasional Nova or other worthy program), equipped with cable internet and wi-fi?
TCM is the one I watch most. Then the MGM. SONY and HGTV channels.
Then there are some of the STARZ western channels I watch.
I hate a two hour movie that goes on for three hours because of advertisements. For every two minutes of play you get one minute of advertisements.
I’ll pass.
I miss several of the old channels that USED TO BE commercial free such as IFC, SUNDANCE and AMC. They used to have great movies but now have gone to trash.
NOT HGTV, HDTV!
Pearls before swine... /grin.
Yours was the only acceptable answer but nary a single comeback. Kodi absolutely rocks! I’ve never had so much fun!

Netflix is terrible for watching movies. OTOH Its good for watching shows—old tv and some of its exclusive content.
I tried watching PBS online for things I missed on regular PBS TV and they wanted me to become a paid subscriber to be able to do that.
So, on Kodi.tv I would be able to search say ‘ The Tunnel season 2 ‘ and find it?
Like you, I don’t watch TV and don’t have cable.
I have used Netfix on mailed DVDs since 2006. Great service.
The mailing takes one day each way. I can mail movies I’ve watched on Mon and have the next movies from my queue on Thurs. The mailing is free of charge both ways.
For $13 a month, I can have two DVDs at once. Pay more and you can have more. If I work at it, I can have 6 or 8 movies a month, way more than enough.
They send me an email when they mail the next two movies from my queue. It also lists the new releases.
The Netflix web site is comprehensive and easy to use. Has thousands of movies to choose from.
Great service and so much cheaper than going to the movies.
Yes, agreed: Amazon Prime and Hulu for tv shows.
We liked The Crown too. Missed it when it ended.
I use Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Recent release movies are available to rent for less than a movie ticket. Granted, they are not available when they are on the big screen but a few months later they usually are.
I have the add on subscription for Showtime which is well worth the fee. Programs ‘ Billions ‘ and ‘ Ray Donovan ‘ are first rate viewing.
A lot of the original content with both Netflix and Amazon are excellent.

You can even put it on a windows computer...
It is basically xbox media center that was made for Android installation, use your old phone, install this, get a micro usb to hdmi cable, hook your phone to your tv and free tv. Live stuff a little more difficult, but we did manage to watch the race today on a low quality live stream. You can watch about any movie out there (EVER) and also pretty much any tv show that has ever aired.
Sure Kodi and install the Exodus package then you can see everything for free
Go to be a little bit of a computer geek but you can Kodi on your smartphone or an Amazon fire stick. Kodi is free software
Once you get Kodi up and running. Then work out of install The Exodus package. Little bit with Google help you find instructions
Kodi will install on just about anything
Installed on just about any smartphone iPhones or Android
You can install on any tablet iPad or an Android tablet
on any PC windows, mac , Linux
But the coolest set up right now is install it on a firestick and get a fire stick for really cheap.. really with a firestick for 60 70 bucks your TV smarter than any Smart TV
That's because you need sources, in addition to kodi,
That would be "Exodus."
There are on line instructions for downloading and setting that up.
Hows the video quality on Kodi?
Video quality on Firestick for Netflix and Amazon is 1080P, looks real good.
This advice isn’t high tech, but you could try a public library.
My library has a large rack of DVDs. They have all kinds—old movies, new movies, documentaries, tv series. I haven’t been to a movie theater since 1998 (why leave the couch if you don’t have to?), so every movie is new to me. They did have several of last year’s Oscar-nominated movies and ones that weren’t.
I think you can check out for a week, they’re FREE and they have drive through drop boxes. I live near my library so it’s not a problem to return them.
Just an idea.
it use to be Netflix was the streaming service to go to but now I think that Amazon prime is the way to go. I have that service along with Netflix. there are channels you can subscribe to on amazon that have more first run movies. I rotate the channels subscribing to one and then dropping it to subscribe to another rotating between STRARS, HBO, Showtime and Cinemax never keeping the services more then a month.
My experience has been recent and brief, and it involved only movies. And a brief exploration of TV series from the past. The older the material, the better the resolution. Some of the recent movies have both poor audio and video. I tried to watch The Arrival (2016) unsuccessfully, but when the DVD became available for purchase, for me watching the Blu Ray had the same problem with the audio. The Video was of course perfect on the Blu Ray.
There are many on-line movie services which offer them. I watched “Life” and “Beauty and the Beast” tonight. The newest ones are good quality screen captures but most older ones are HD. There’s a great selection, too. Check out 123movies or Movies 32.
