This advice isn’t high tech, but you could try a public library.

My library has a large rack of DVDs. They have all kinds—old movies, new movies, documentaries, tv series. I haven’t been to a movie theater since 1998 (why leave the couch if you don’t have to?), so every movie is new to me. They did have several of last year’s Oscar-nominated movies and ones that weren’t.

I think you can check out for a week, they’re FREE and they have drive through drop boxes. I live near my library so it’s not a problem to return them.

Just an idea.

I have a couple of problems with this solution. First, I reconfigured the way my wireless headphones and Amazon Fire Stick connect with my TV so that I could stream. It would be a total absolute pain to have to unplug and replug in these connections. Right now, I'm set up for streaming, and that is much more convenient than having to schlep videos back to the library or to the mailbox.

Second, most NYC libraries have ONE copy of a given video, and so, with each copy getting all the wear and tear, they're pretty scratched up unless you luck out and are among the first few viewers of that video.

Third, NYC public libraries really gouge you in fines if you are late returning a video. I think it's up to $3/day now. Ouch.
