Great song, great singer.
Also recently passed on, the amazing Gayle McCormick of “Smith” which had a hit in 1969 with “Baby It’s You”.

The tune used for his poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry" describing the attack on Fort McHenry was a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith. It was popular in the States at the time also. I don't know who it was who put the two together, though. The tune, called Anacreon, had been around for quite some time, and had had other lyrics written for it, including patriotic lyrics in the late 1700s (cf. here). My guess is that Key wrote the poem to fit the tune, since it would have made no sense to have written it metrically as he did otherwise.

Post #49 before that came up?Oh....yeah! That song HAS to be the ultimate One Hit Wonder...or is that One-der? There can never be another hit by The Wonders and that one basically sums up the early days of Rock 'n' Roll.
Although, on Billboard, it never charted higher than #41. So...this thread needs to have a definition of the word "Hit". Top 100?, Top 10? Number 1?
