An urban dog hunting club aims to help eradicate New York City's vermin. Ryders Alley Trencherfed Society (RATS) was started by member Richard Reynolds in 1995, at the bequest of a park superintendent who had a rat problem.

....can they be trained to sniff out illegals?
There is a breed of dog called the Jack Russell terrier, and a similar-looking but more rugged variety called a rat terrier. A cross between these two results in both a degree of hybrid vigor, and a highly aggressive rat hunter, small enough to go into corners with rats, and quick enough to evade most of the slashing counterattacks by the cornered rat.
The dog comes out with an overwhelming sense of victory with the dead rat in his jaws. So where is the next one? Bring it on, yippee-ki-f**king-yay, in the very best Bruce Willis manner.
I’ve owned Rat Terriers my whole life, and can attest to their instinctive killing efficiency. Unlike Jack Russell’s, they’re very docile until it’s time to do their jobs. Then, in a millisecond they become extremely violent; kill quickly by shaking their victim from side-to-side until their neck snaps; then drop said victim to find another; and then, return to your lap to go back to sleep. Unlike cats, they don’t return to, play with or carry around their victims, and in fact, ignore them as if nothing ever happened. It’s the damnest thing you’ll ever witness.
Let them start at NBC HQ.
I had a Yorkshire terrier that was similarly efficient. Boy did I love that dog!
They found that cats will co-exist with rats if there is plenty of food - and NYC dumpsters could feed several third-world countries.
Check out the size of some of these rats from an article I read in Modern Farmer...these guys run a commercial rat eradication business using dogs in California...I love terriers, had a Cairn when I was a kid and have always wanted a Jack Russell...
A friend wrote: “Waiting for the animal rights rats to come out and protest the inhumane and cruel treatment of those rats.”
A rat terrier could be the dogs Trump needs to have at the WH the media is whining about him having no pets...
This is a misleading headline. This is a Terrier club for rat killing breeds. The pics at the link show a Staffordshire, a Jack Russel (I think) and a Bedlington.
There are AKC shows for this kind of activity. I went to one a few weeks ago called Barn Hunt. Earthdog is a terrier one which I’d like to see.
Isn’t there a chance the dogs might catch some diseases? And the same for the handlers who don’t appear to be wearing gloves....
It always seems to be the London newspapers that cover our news the best. With loads of pictures and video clips.
I love the symbolism of President Donald trump owning a rat terrier.
I have a smooth fox.
People are astonished when I tell them she’s 14 years old.
The rat in the photo looks like Bill de Blasio.
That’s a pretty efficient killing machine. The human owners are lucky the dogs let’em hang around.
Bring them to D.C., they have the huge variety of rats there that cause immeasurable damage not only in D.C. but throughout the nation, and even the world. 8>)
Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred to be rat hunter-killers. We had an AKC Yorkie who was the most docile ever. He was so cool that he was a therapy dog for the local hospice. He just loved everybody. Our current one is just the opposite and even in his puppy picture from the breeder you could see ornery written all over his face.
He has a host of plush toys that he still today will shake, or should I say whip, side to side while growling just as described earlier. Most are now without stuffing but he knows exacly where all of them are whenever he feels the need to get his ya-ya’s out.
