Nike ad sends serious message about equality, opportunity and discrimination
Washington Post ^ | February 12, 2017 | Cindy Boren

he message in Nike’s powerful new ad campaign is delivered by the biggest stars in the sports firmament and it comes as Black History Month is in its second week.

The message is spelled out in black and white, with only the word “EQUALITY,” and the company’s logo. What the company is trying to get across, the week after Under Armour’s Kevin Plank brought down the wrath of one of the company’s biggest stars by praising President Trump’s business acumen and saying he is “a real asset for the country,” comes from images of LeBron James, Serena Williams, Kevin Durant, Victor Cruz, Gabby Douglas, Megan Rapinoe, Dalilah Muhammad and a voice-over that is clear and direct.

I would boycott Nike but have not owned a pair of Nike's for three decades. This is rich coming from a company that pays its production workers dollars a day while handing out multimillion checks to pro-athletes who already make seven figure incomes. This is a company who targets people to induce them to pay hundreds of dollars for a pair of sneakers that are on welfare.

I saw the ad, but it was too “sophisticated” for me. I didn’t really get it until I realized they were just selling shoes.

Ha! I just got my weekly email from them with the word ‘EQUALITY’ on it. I took it as being preachy about something, so I unsubscribed to all emails. They ask whether I wanted to give a reason for unsubscribing but I declined, because I didn’t want to waste anymore of my precious weekend time.

So tired of this non stop carping. A ship that stays at general quarters 100% of the time stops taking it seriously. The constant revolutionary socialism everywhere is getting old. People are tuning out.

No Latinos????? No gay men????? No transgender people???? No disabled people????? Can you believe the bigotry and privilege on display in this ad? Nike ought to be ashamed of itself of being so anti-inclusive in its ad campaign. They need to be fined by the PC police!!!!

Do they really mean “equal”? if so, then their execs have to start by paying themselves the same amount they pay their janitors.

If they truly believed in equality they should have 78% white players, men and women, on their teams.

Guess you just ain’t “nuanced” enough for them huh? LOL! Equality and inclusiveness are simply awesome. Unless you disagree with their screed. Then you aren’t included and you sure ain’t equal. Do they see the reality of this or just choose to ignore it because, by golly, they’re right and we’re not. REALLY getting tired of these assclowns

The little bit I saw of the ad in TV coverage this AM showed all blacks. It was filmed in Cleveland. If it only features blacks, that ad is very disturbing. Cleveland is a diverse city which cannot survive if it doesn't embrace the full spectrum of its ethnicity. What I saw of that ad is disturbingly racist.

Correct me if that impression is incorrect, please.

All I got out of it is that Nike likes to spray paint a white line wherever they like. Vandalism and graffitti basically.

We have let them define equality.

Just for the record, how does Free Republic define equality?

I’ve never worn Nike athletic shoes because their comfort leaves much to be desired compared to the New Balance shoes I normally wear (I have three pairs of New Balance shoes and plan to get a fourth soon).
