From Friday restaurants in France will be breaking the law if they offer unlimited fizzy drinks to customers, as the government takes another step to fight the problem of obesity.
The new law was published in the governments Journal Officiel website on Thursday and will come into effect on Friday.
It specifically states that its illegal to sell soft drinks at a fixed price for an unlimited amount of drink, and illegal to offer unlimited amounts for free.
The ban applies to all soft drinks or soda fountains in places open to the public, including fast food-chains and restaurants.
It also bans refills on any flavored or carbonated drinks, concentrates like fruit syrups, sports drinks, energy drinks, or essentially anything that comes with added sugar.

Good thing France has all of their other problems solved.
Does this included iced tea or just sweetened tea? It says soft drinks (which in the US includes tea), carbonated drinks (which excludes tea), AND drinks with added sugar (which includes sweetened (not necessarily “Southern SWEEEEEEEEEET”) tea).
Why just France? The whole EUSSR should do this an we could watch the thing entirely implode.
Brigitte Bardot
Gerard Depardieu
Although Gerard has fled France.
No, just as New York's ban on 44oz soft drinks at convenience stores does not apply to 40oz bottles of malt liquor and Obama's ban on flavored cigarettes did not apply to menthol.
Well said.
Bloomberg became Mayor of France?
Fashion sense in France probably has a lot to do with it. I imagine that fat people in France don't wear spandex, tight tee shirts and revealing swimwear.
Appropriate dress can go a long way to improving the appearance of overweight people. I am astonished at the number of fat people in the U.S. who do not seem to understand this.
France, you fixed all your other problems - like Muslim terrorism, lowering taxes and getting rid of the power of unions? If you did, then give citizens more freedoms...
French people are much more anticipatory in fighting obesity than Americans. It if far easier to head off than cure.
Just offer refills up to 10 liters for a given price. . .
Isn’t socialist fascism grand? Fools. Tyrants.
Muslims raping and murdering people and they’re banning soda refills. Priorities..
If only we lived in France.....
Wow, France never had an obesity problem.
When I went to college there, I remember other students coming to our apartment, looking at our food, and saying they were DYING of hunger, but wouldn’t eat because it was between mealtimes. One of the reasons they were so thin. Also the cigarette smoking. When I was there I kept feeling like I was rude, turning down offered Gaulloises all day long.
People have been telling me forever that there are no fat people in france because their farmers are unionized or something.
Ah yes the Nanny state in full bloom.
I live in Arkansas and just saw on the news something similar in taxing soda’s more. What a Crock.
