Driving this route soon. Have never been this way before. Little concerned because of the recent ice storms in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Any helpful hints? Best route? Any fun sights or good eats along the way?
you know you are just begging for route 66 comments. :-)
waze app.
US 280 to Denton from Amarillo and then I-30 to Austin
sorry. i was vague. download the waze app. it’s an information aggregator for driving conditions, which can change from minute to minute.
it’s also pretty awesome for finding a route that is quicker, but perhaps you had overlooked.
Should be clear by Monday. Take 87 south all the way to Brady. Just south of Brady take 71 east to Austin. When you get close to Big Spring you’ll see some mountain, to the east is a lone mountain that comes to a small peak. That’s Signal Peak and it’s just inside the north end of the ranch.
Its north and central Texas. Give it three days.
Everything will have melted.
More seriously, you need to look at LOCAL weather beginning three-four days before the event. ANything prior will either melt away, or evaporate away, or flow away downriver long before you get there.
Watch out for deer.
I-35 is the primary N/S road through central TX. And I would not recommend it as it carries heavy traffic that bogs down regularly. Knowledgeable travelers stay off of I-35 and use parallel roads on either side of it. In the case of the OP, I'd recommend 287 S/E out of Amarillo to Wichita Falls then take 281 S to Lampasas, taking 183 into the Austin area. I highly recommend stopping for BBQ in Stephenville at the Hard Eight BBQ joint. It is right on the highway.
Careful, a lot of people die driving in Texas, from overwhelming boredom
287 south to Ft Worth. South of Ft Worth jog over to 281. Takes you down through the Hill Country by LBJ Ranch, etc.

Texas is a big place!
Yes, but the speed limit on most four-lane state highways, and even some two-lane FM roads is 75 mph.
Depends if you want to go interstate for fast or other US and state highways for seeing countryside and small town Texas. We RV a lot and usually go the leisure routes. Winter storms in Texas usually are not like they are in, say, Montana, Michigan, Minnesota etc.
I will add, beware and follow reduced speed limits going through small towns and communities. Lots of opportunities for LEO gotcha!
Stop at Buc-ee’s along the way.
I-30 don't run that way, pardner. You want to get to Austin from Denton, you take I-35 south.
Or
Driving from Hippy infested Commie Pinko Town to God's Country
I wanted to do that a few years ago in a convertible but had no takers....maybe someday.
