In March 2015, one of the largest nuclear-powered warships in the world was sunk by one of the smallest. The Saphir, a French nuclear attack submarine, reportedly penetrated the defenses of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and scored simulated torpedo hits on her. The incident, originally reported by the French Navy, was later suppressed.

I'm told that my mining plan sank (exercise) a Los Angeles-class submarine during GLOBEX-86.
It helps that I was thinking like a 688 skipper and anticipated where they might want to go.

Pfffttttt. Does France even have any Orion or Poseidon aircraft? The simulation allowed them use of ours to find the carrier group. In a real shooting war, we are the ones with the Orions and Poseidons, and they are hunting enemy subs!
Kudos to the French for acing the exercise with a stacked deck. In real war, we are so far ahead of the pack it isn’t funny.

I recall a time when many of our aviation/surface Carrier Strike Group Commanders had a COS from the submarine community. Don’t know if that’s the case anymore or not, but it makes sense.

We need more battleships! More subs! More jeep carriers for drones, Robot subs, More warplanes!

Actually, not so much. there is a wave to be sure but the pressure goes up not down, it takes the path of least resistance so that the underwater pressure is not so great unless it is close. For instance, a 1/10th megaton bomb could take out everything within say a half mile on the surface because of the wave, the wave would knock over the ships. The vast portion of the energy of the explosion goes nearly straight up over the bomb, when the water comes down however it creates a huge wave on the water surface. That wave right after the wave from the initial blast will cause a lot of damage. There will be little or no heat or radiation damage if the bomb is deep enough except for ships pretty close to the blast, mostly just kinetic damage from water.
