Free Republic is currently broken

I've been having problems loading pages on Freerepublic for over a week. I thought it was just my connection (I live in the sticks and use a my-fi ATT hotspot for all my internet.

However, I have the exact same problem at my work computer in downtown Louisville on a high speed corporate network.

The problem manifests itself at least two ways: 1. Pages take so long to load that they timeout and I get a "page reset" message. 2. A partial page loads (often just the first line or two) and then eventually the rest starts showing up in chunks.

Nothing else on the internet in either location hs having any such (or similar) problem.

On a side note. If I log out and just view anonymously, I get to see the first part of the article under the title. But when I log in, I only see titles. This became the default a couple of months ago and when I go to the page to change my settings, no option is given to do so. Just a bunch of darkly colored horizontal bars that look like "partially loaded" buttons with no label.

Anybody else having these problems

I hope to delete all my anti virus software offline and see if Windows defender will remove it.
Before deleting anything, boot into Safemode first, then try running Win Defender.

Yeah, super slow here. Posts taking forever or not posting. All other sites seem to work just fine though.

Takes money to make upgrades and Jim usually has to beg just to meet minimum expenses...

Donate to FR

and if enough whiners follow suit we may someday have a more robust platform.

I’m on a MacBook Pro, and use Chrome to access FR. The only problem I’ve been having is Chrome related. Thread pages open, but have a black screen. This is happening on other sites as well, not just FR. Yesterday I had to close and reopen Chrome four times to access the websites I wanted to visit. I use Safari too, but prefer viewing FR on Chrome. I used to use Firefox, but after one of their updates, something in that browser was causing it to freeze up. Dumped that for Chrome.

It's not just you.

I have noticed a page loading stutter since the last hardware down. A chunk of the page will come down, there will be a pause, then another chunk, until the page is fully loaded.

I use an extension which changes a page's appearance slightly. It doesn't run until the page is fully loaded, so I notice when there's a late load.

FWIW I have this problem a lot ... and I have a good internet connection. The pages do eventually load ...there is just a lag between the initial few lines loading and the rest of the page loading. The lag might be a 2-3 sec or occasionally longer.

Before deleting anything, boot into Safemode first, then try running Win Defender.

I have windows 8.1 and I think safemode no longer exists. I looked up help mode and they told me to go online. Imagine have a computer out of whack and can't get on line and these dumb clucks tell you go go on line as they are too cheap to print a manual.

Some problems with FR but also some trouble signing into other websites as well.

The internet seems to be running slower and a bit gimpy for the past month.

After the big crash, everything worked well. Infact, I read this thread a couple of hours ago and wasn’t having any issues, so didn’t respond. However, since then, I’ve begun to have issues like you described.

If I click on a link to read the thread, the pages are loading slowly, and in sections. First the titles appear, then the text.

I am on ATT too, and their connection tends to be a bit slower than Cox was in my area, but the pages are loading slowly even for AT&T. It’s taking a good 7-10 seconds for a page to load on my computer which is running Linux and 4gigs of ram...so it tends to be pretty fast. Using firefox browser.

Hopefully, those who count will see this thread and take a look at things before they go south lol!

Thanks for the link. Evidently Defender does not work in safe mode, at least for me. Windows has become the worst software ever. I will never buy their products again.

Thanks
