Alabama will play Washington and Ohio State is set to face Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
The selection committee stayed with the same top four Sunday as it had going into championship weekend, leaving out No. 5 Penn State even though the Nittany Lions won the Big Ten title game and beat Ohio State earlier in the season.

I thought I’d made a mistake this year, but I was wrong.
I think they pit #4 against #1, one of the perqs of being number 1.
Alabama has played Washington four times previously, twice in bowls and not since 1986. Huskies fans were holding up signs at games late in the season, proclaiming "We want Bama."
"Sometimes you got to be careful what you wish for," Washington coach Chris Petersen said on ESPN. "I didn't hold up that sign."
- Roll Tide -
and I thought it was when they stuck a facemask on the ol brain-bucket
I hate interleague play almost as much as I hate the Designated Hitter.
And nobody's going to beat Alabama.
And pretty much every SEC East team is a cupcake as well.
Roll Tide
The difference is that the SEC doesn’t play cupcake conference games like PAC 12 teams do. Be truthful now, would you really want to play LSU, Miss, St., Ole Miss, Arkansas. Texas A&M and Auburn, each year in your division, and Tennessee as your permanent out of division rival? Alabama plays a cupcake or two because the SEC is usually so brutal, year in and year out. Pac 12, not so much. Best team in your conference right now is USC, not Washington.
No, I’m not kidding. Late season body bag games are joke. SEC is the only league that does it a lot that I am aware of.
Ohiostate has 1 loss Penn state 2. Ohio is 3-0 against the top 25, Penn state 2-1. The playoffs are not about conference championships, they are about national rankings and include performances outside the conference and of course the polls. Ohio State is ahead in the polls.
USC beat washington, but they have 3 losses. Should they take their place in the top 4?
“OSU vs Clemson game ought to be worth watching.”
Very much so.
Alabama’s defense has been rock solid this year. They have turned in a strong performance in every game. But they are not invulnerable. Consider Clemson’s offensive yardage last year against Alabama. Or consider Florida’s opening drive yesterday. (Florida had at least one other pretty drive, even if it came up dry at the end.)
For some reason, Alabama’s offense seems to me to be less than the sum of its parts. I don’t know why. Young offensive line? In any case, the offense takes a while to get going.
In the old, power, “smash-mouth” Alabama football era, the physical toll on the opposing defense often took its toll by the fourth quarter. I don’t know how much that applies in the new big-play Alabama era.
Oh-No will be the trashed if they happen to make it thru to play Alabama.
I’d be fun to watch Urban fake a heart attack on the field before the first quarter is over.
The SEC, ACC and the Big-10 all play four non-conference games, while the Pac-12 plays only three. They usually play one decent team and three cupcakes. Alabama, for example, played Kent State, Chatanooga and Western Kentucky.
Bama played Chattanooga in November. Basically an additional bye week right before the biggest games of the year. No other conference pulls that garbage. OTOH, The Pac-12 has a traditional game with Notre Dame in November.
I’m not focusing on a single game. I’m looking at who won their conference.
Washington won the Pac 12 - not USC.
I was under the impression that Penn State won the Big Ten.
How many points did Ole Miss put on the Tide?
None of this speculation means anything because Alabama will win it all anyway. Roll Tide!
That’s what y’all were saying 2 years ago against Ohio State with their 3rd string QB. The Tide hasn’t played against a quality opponent of the likes of the Buckeye this year. AL’s best win came against a 3 loss USC team.
Huskies!
That was my point. National ranking vs who won conference.
I’m surprised they didn’t figure out a way to make it an all SEC. According to the media, they are the only conference in the US anyway.
